GF Team super heavyweight brown belt Gutemberg Pereira conquered the double gold at No-Gi Worlds last weekend in Long Beach, California, winning both his weight class and the openweight division.

We had included Pereira on our list of 6 brown belts to watch at No-Gi Worlds, and he proved his place on that list by ascending to the top of the podium twice in the same weekend.

Here’s what Gutemberg had to say about the experience – below we’ve included his original text in Portuguese / Portugues abaixo.

Every time I look at the medals I smile to myself, because this championship was very important to me. Last year I won as purple belt – weight and openweight – and this year as brown I won weight and openweight as well. So whenever I look at them they look back at me with shining eyes as if they wanted to say ‘congratulations’! Haha! But I’m still ecstatic, I’m so happy!

About my matches: I had 7 fights in total, three in my division and four in the absolute. I began the tournament well, thanks God. My first fight was against a Russian, when you fight with a Russian you know he’s going to be strong, and he was no different! I stayed strong but managed to submit him. The second I managed to link my guard passes together well, kept my workrate high and submitted him (that was the semi-final).

I went into the final against a really tough dude from ATOS, Jimmy Friedrich, I tried to impose my game but he’s really flexible and and like the 50-50 guard, every time I tried to pass he would put me in that ‘bullshit’ haha! I managde to get an advantage for passing, and it was with that I became champion!

In the final I started well finishing my first match, and in the second I fought with a really tough guy I respect a lot in Gabriel Arges. We had a war, thanks God I managed to put a little of what wrestling I’d learned into practice and it gave me four points in the match. The match ended 6-6 with one advantage to me, and I went through to the semi-final.

In the semis I met Jimmy once again, but he didn’t put me in that damn 50-50 haha! I tried passing but I couldn’t secure position. The fight ended with 2 advantages and I went through to the final. In the final I managed to get my guard game going, I’ve got a pretty good guard that sometimes pulls off some good stuff haha! I got a beautiful triangle and finished the fight and I cried like a little baby with happiness.

Então, toda hora eu olho pra elas ainda e fico sorrindo sozinho, porque esse campeonato foi muito importante pra mim, ano passado conseguir ganhar de roxa, peso e absoluto e esse ano de marrom peso e absoluto também, então sempre quando olho pra ela, ela olha de volta pra mim com os olhos brilhando (risos) como se quisesse me dizer parabéns (mais risos), mas estou no momento êxtase ainda, estou muito Feliz!

Sobre minhas lutas : Fiz 7 lutas no total, 3 na categoria e 4 no absoluto! Comecei o Campeonato bem graças a Deus, minha primeira luta foi contra um russo, quando você luta com um russo, você já vai sabendo que vai fazer muita força (risos) e não foi diferente, fiz uma forcinha mas conseguir finalizar, a segunda conseguir conectar bem minhas passagens de guarda e meu giro e finalizei a segunda (semi-final) e fui pra final com um mlk muito duro da Atos o James Friedrich, tentei começar a impor meu jogo, mas ele é bem flexível e gosta do jogo de 50x50, toda vez que eu tentava passar ele me colocava nessa "maldita" (risos), conseguir fazer uma vantagem de passagem, e foi com ela que conseguir ser Campeão!

No absoluto eu comecei bem finalizando a Primeira e na segunda luta lutei com um mlk muito duro que eu respeito muito, que é o Gabriel Arges, agente fez uma guerra, graças a Deus conseguir colocar um pouco do que eu aprendi de wrestling na luta e foi o que me deu 4 pontos na luta, a luta terminou 6 X 6 e 1 vantagem pra mim e conseguir passar para semifinal, na semi me deparo novamente com o James o da final da categoria, mas agora ele não me colocou na "maldita" 50x50 (risos) fiz algumas tentativas de passagem, mas não conseguir estabilizar terminou a luta por Duas vantagens e conseguir passar pra final, Na final conseguir conectar bem o meu jogo de guarda, tenho uma guardinha que de vez em quando sai umas gracinhas (muitos risos), e na final saiu um bonito Triângulo e conseguir finalizar a luta e chorar que nem um bebezinho de felicidade.
