Dirk Van Tichelt realized his Olympic dreams by capturing the bronze medal in the 73kg division. To celebrate the achievement, he went out to Copacabana Beach on Monday night. 

This turned out to be a mistake. 

The world famous beach plays host to the Beach Volleyball tournament by day. But at night, it's where Rio goes to party. A thief assaulted Van Tichelt, getting away with the judoka's cell phone. Fortunately, he was unable to get away with the bronze medal. Van Tichelt was taken to a hospital for assessment. He was later released as it wasn't a serious injury.

Belgian's Olympic Committee confirmed that Van Tichelt was assaulted.
