An Army Of Freaks Is Coming To ADCC West Coast Trials
You can bet that 10th Planet will be represented in force this weekend at the ADCC West Coast Trials, a qualifying event for arguably the most prestigious no-gi grappling competition in the world.

Two of 10th Planet's most recognizable characters -- Richie "Boogeyman" Martinez and Geo "Freakahzoid" Martinez -- will be bringing a veritable army of just their students alone to Anaheim, CA.

Twelve competitors from the Freak Brothers' academies are competing for a coveted ticket to the ADCC World Championship, which will be held in Espoo, Finland, this September.

"I feel like we're going to do great this year. We have a lot of up-and-coming talent, and a lot of people who are game to win this type of tournament," Richie said. "We're really happy that they're bringing ADCC trials back to the West Coast. This is our home, and we're going to do whatever it takes to be victorious in this tournament."

While some teams may elect to send only their top candidates to represent them at the trials, the brothers decided to allow many of their active competitors a shot at the title.

"It's hard to pick who gets to compete, so, hey, let's all just try. If we have to compete against each other, whoever wins gets the shot, you know, and that's how it works," Geo said. "To us, it's just like whoever wins is the person who deserves it."

Of those "Freaks" competing, two are black belts, six are brown belts, and four are purple belts.

"A lot of our purple belts are hungry, and they're good, they're ready to go. So if they want to have a shot, then why not?" Geo said. "We've seen them beat a lot of high level guys before. It doesn't matter really what belt you are, it's how you perform."

In a no-gi tournament, the 10th Planet competitors may have a slight advantage, with daily no-gi training and a system that encourages creativity and unorthodox techniques. That doesn't mean the Freaks intend to cruise through the tournament.

"I believe a lot of the 10th Planet guys are ahead of the curve when it comes down to no-gi. But there are other schools that are good at no-gi, too, you know? We're not the only ones. Obviously, a lot of Danaher's squad are good, Marcelo guys are really good, the Atos guys over here on the West Coast are good," Geo said. "The high-level 10th Planet guys are definitely going to do some damage. I can't speak for everyone, but I can speak for the Freaks, and I know we're ready."

In addition to those competing in the main qualifying tournament, Geo will facing off against Bruno Frazatto in a highly anticipated super fight.

"This is a special super fight for me, because it's a rematch against a very experienced, very tough competitor, Bruno Frazatto," Geo said. "He's a beast. I've been watching him for a long time, you know, since I was a white belt and he was already a black belt. He's a complete gamer, he's an athlete, and he's very intelligent. I have a lot of respect for him. So that's why I'm going to make sure I give him my best. And I think someone at his level brings the best out of me."
