Chael Sonnen's fate has been hanging in balance since early April when his opponent for the ADCC World Championships, Ricardo Liborio, needed to pull out due to injury. This left the American Gangster without an opponent for the super fight series later this year in Finland.

ADCC has officially tapped the former UFC heavyweight champion and jiu-jitsu specialist Frank Mir as a replacement. Both men have an accomplished MMA career but have never crossed paths in the cage.

Possibly Mir's most infamous win came against another jiu-jitsu specialist Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, when he snapped his arm with a rolling kimura submission. The 37 year old black belt also holds notable MMA wins over Brock Lesnar, Mirko Crocop, and Roy Nelson.

Sonnen grappled twice in 2014 and 2015 facing ADCC absolute champion Andre Galvao and fellow UFC veteran Renato Sobral in a separate organization. Most recently Sonnen was submitted via rear-naked choke by Tito Ortiz and is schedule to headline Bellator 180 against Wanderlei Silva.
