IBJJF Chicago Open: Keenan's Run At Ranking Prize, Pereira's Strong Debut
Keenan Cornelius has won double gold at the majority of IBJJF tournaments held this summer and showed no signs of slowing down at the 2017 IBJJF Chicago Summer Open over the weekend.

Cornelius continued his dominating tear by winning both the heavyweight and absolute divisions in the two-day tournament, which was hosted at Chicago State University.

In pursuit of the IBJJF Adult Black Belt League No. 1 ranking and of course the accompanying $15,000 end-of-season prize, he jumped all the way from No. 12 to 8 on the list after his latest double gold performance.

Cornelius' Atos teammate Lucas "Hulk" Barbosa took gold in the medium-heavyweight division but sat out the absolute as Hinger and Cornelius took the two available spots in the bracket for Atos.

The 27 ranking points received for the weight category gold were enough to see Barbosa pass Otavio Souza and move up to No. 12 in the rankings. Both Cornelius and Barbosa are registered for the upcoming Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Tokyo and could potentially move as high as No. 5 with a double gold performance for either athlete.

Pereira makes strong debut

Gutemberg Pereira made his anticipated black belt debut this weekend and did not disappoint. The 2017 IBJJF Worlds brown belt super-heavyweight champion submitted his first four opponents on the day, including two triangle chokes over Atos veteran Josh Hinger. However, Pereira would eventually run into Cornelius in the absolute final and lose by triangle choke himself, finishing the day a with gold in his weight class and silver in the open division.

Miyao runs through his division

There was no surprise in the light-featherweight division as three-time world silver medalist Joao Miyao dominated the competition. Miyao is currently ranked fourth and gained some ground on Marcus Buchecha and the three spot. The incredibly active Miyao should be another athlete in contention for the end-of-season No. 1 ranking.

Best of the rest

The remaining three black belt brackets in Chicago saw the youth take home gold medals. The 2017 world brown belt lightweight silver medalist, Dante Leon, conquered the middleweight division and also brought home an absolute bronze medal after falling to Cornelius in the semifinals by kimura. Silvio Duran of Vitor Shaolin BJJ was victorious at featherweight, and Alexandre Molinaro of Carlson Gracie won a tough lightweight bracket with buzzer-beating sweeps to win in both the semifinal and final.
