Gabi To Face Last Person To Beat Her, Ana Carolina, In Pans Absolute Final
Ana Carolina is the only athlete who has been able to stop the Gabi Pessanha train. They'll meet again at the Pans absolute final.
Gabi Pessanha and Ana Carolina Vieira are set for a rematch tomorrow in the open class final at the 2023 IBJJF Pan Championships.
Pessanha has been utterly dominant in her last several years of competition. She took gold in her IBJJF black belt debut at Pans 2021, then won double gold at 2021 Brasileiros and Worlds, and followed that up with an unbeaten streak in 2022, securing double gold at Euros, Pans, Brasileiros and Worlds. She kicked off her 2023 campaign in the same fashion, taking double gold at Euros with all submission victories.
But Vieira will pose an important test for Pesanha. The five-time IBJJF world champ is the only athlete who has ever defeated Pessanha on the IBJJF black belt stage, stopping her in the semifinal of the 2021 Pan Championships in the absolute division. Vieira had a fiery start to her weekend, submitting Ffion Davies and Thamiris Silva on her road to the final.
They will face off on Sunday afternoon on mat 13 at around 3 p.m. ET. Watch it live on FloGrappling.
