EBI 6 Champion Gordon Ryan Details His Relationship With Mentor Garry Tonon

EBI 6 Champ Talks Leglocks and Mentor Tonon

Gordon Ryan shocked the jiu-jitsu community over the weekend when he won EBI 6 'The Absolutes' by submitting all four of his opponents (two in regulation) and taking home $25,000. Gordon has been on a tear since he got his his black belt in January, winning super fight after super fight. It started with the Sapateiro Invitational where he submitted all four of his opponents, then he won the Good Fight Pro, submitted Nathan Orchard in the finals of the Portland Sunday Open, put on a show at the 2nd Onnit Invitational and topped it off with an incredible tournament at EBI 6 which featured his stiffest competition to date.

Back in March FloGrappling went to Garry Tonon's gym Ocean County BJJ to film a documentary on the EBI 5 champion and while we were there talked to the brand new blackbelt about what it's like training with Garry, how long the leglock advantage will last and how he feels against the highest level of competition.

I was never a big points player and the biggest thing that was inspiring about them was their leglocks. When I first started doing leglocks I thought '"these positions suck! I can't do outside heelhooks, I suck, these moves don't even work". But I saw Garry and Eddie doing them at the highest levels and I thought, "Oh the moves are fine – I just suck at it". So I kept working on those and now I'm halfway decent.
