These early weight classes are marred by no-shows, pushing some matches back. Still, a lot of good action going on. Kennedy takes the mat for his weight and wins, that's his last match for the day. Also in that weight, both Sodre brothers, Isaac Doederlein, and Ademir Barreto advance. Robinho, recent ADCC Trials champ, also advances at lightweight.

Brianna Ste-Marie is on the mats. Her opponent pulls but BSM is quick to work with the pass to mount and she gets her 7. She gets her lapel out and uses it to choke - and gets the tap. Great first match.

Submissions are rolling here. Rolando with an armbar, Vitoria Vieira submits her first opponent with a triangle, Alex Sodre snatches an armbar to advance.

The weight divisions are rolling out now. Euros & Pan champ Shelby Murphey and Guilia Guimaraes get us started by winning their semifinals and setting up a rematch in the finals. Murphey is having one of the best debut black belt years in a while. Up a division, her teammate Mayssa Bastos continues her winning ways with a semifinal victory by only in advantage in a close match. She's had a few of those up at light-feather, is a match with her teammate Shelby going to happen at Worlds if she drops down? In the other light-feather semi, Brenda Larissa of Alliance takes an upset win over Jessica Caroline Coelho by advantages, scoring with a near-back take in the closing seconds.

Our last absolute fight of the day is up and it's Pedro Machado vs P edro Lucas. Throughout ten minutes, neither is able to get much going and rack up a pair of penalties. This will go to decision. It goes to Pedro Lucas, an upset! The absolute finals will be him and Hygor Brito.

Kennedy Maciel is up again, semifinal time against Hygor Brito. After a pair of double pulls lead to penalties, Kennedy times the next pull and scores on an ankle pick counter. Brito sweeps back, all tied up now and Kennedy is playing single leg X. Brito trying to counter with an ankle lock, he's got a nasty one, but Maciel staying safe. Brito is able to hang out there for long enough, he gets the advantage and will win on that.

An upset in the absolute, as Harryson Pereira (the 2 seed) gets submitted with a nasty straight ankle lock. That was a quick one, Hygor Brito with the finish and he will advance! He faces Kennedy next. On the mat over, Anderson Marinho beats Helder Jose to continue advancing as well.

Pedro Machado, the one seed in the open class, begins his campaign with a submission. He secured the choke from the back to advance in the absolute. He's out soon for his quarterfinal against Felipe Augusto Farias Bezerra. Through 8 minutes, he's playing guard but unable to make much happen. He finally scores an advantage in the final minute on a near sweep, then adds a sweep to win.

Gabi Pessanha pushes her streak to 121-0, with a points victory over Stefhanie Costa. Costa was able to slow things down but ultimately Pessanha just could not be denied another absolute finals appearance. It's her and Yara Soares into the finals.

Not much rest for Lima, he's up against Maciel already. Two minutes in, both picking up 3 penalties for double pulls. Next one is a DQ. Next exchange, Kennedy catches the pull with an ankle pick, he gets the 2 points he wanted and now is on top using a stack pass against the larger Italo. He forces the turtle, takes the back! He's having trouble sinking the second hook, no points yet, but navigates the scramble and finally scores to lead 8-2. There's the choke! Kennedy into the semifinals!

Yara Soares and Melissa Stricker take the mat now, this is one of the best fights of the morning. Yara scores the advantage coming up on the double pull, Cueto will play guard. They trade sweeps, Cueto leads 4-2 and Yara is in her lasso guard. They keep exchanging sweeps but it's Stricker who is able to stabilize much longer in top position. Yara scores again but keeps falling back, 2 minutes left and she trails by 2. With thirty seconds left she takes top position to lead by an advantage, if she can stabilize she will win... and she does! Soares into the finals.

Cleyton Flores and Italo Lima take the mats in what could be an interesting matchup here. Italo pulls and shoots his signature triangle - then attacks the arm - for the quick finish! Wow what a statement made in round one. He will have Kennedy next.

Kennedy Maciel, who competes (and regularly wins) at featherweight, is about to take the mat for his first absolute match. He's the three seed for the bracket, but it will be a long road for the smaller grappler. He starts with a guard pull, not wanting to mess around on the feet. He uses a belt grip to off balance his opponent - and transitions to the armbar! Kennedy Maciel wins and advances.
