Yuri Simoes Pissed At Dean Lister: 'We'll See What's Up'

Yuri Simoes likes submission-only format events, but with a catch: "I think the rules are good, but what really matters is the mindset of the competitors," he says. "If you want to go out and stall for 10 minutes, it's the same as other events. I think if you have the mentality to go HAM, it's really good."

HAM is something Yuri Simoes can do. It was his all-out style of attack that saw become the 88kg champion at the 2015 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships.

The 2015 ADCC tournament will go down as one of Simoes's greatest performances, but there's one small black mark that remains from that weekend.

Simoes clearly beat the veteran grappler and two-time ADCC champion Dean Lister in the openweight division, although some confusion among the officials means the American was left with a bitter taste in his mouth.

"It's the only match in my life where I feel I was truly ripped off by the judges," said Lister

Hearing that upset Simoes. "I didn't expect it coming from him, he's a veteran and a two-time champion at that tournament. He knows the rules very well," says Simoes.

In that match I passed his guard two or three times, I got his back, I took him down. I really don't know why he''s complaining. He did nothing.

I had a lot of respect for Dean but when he said that, it really pissed me off you know? I didn't expect it from him. We'll see who wins this weekend, I'm looking forward to that. I trained really hard and we'll see what's up.

Simoes and Lister will have the chance to settle the score on July 23 at Fight To Win Pro 8. They'll meet in the main event, a heavyweight no-gi match.

"It will be awesome, it will be great for the Bay Area and NorCal. We don't usually have many events like this, it's great for jiu-jitsu and great for here. My girlfriend and a lot of my students and friends are going to support and that means a lot to me. I'm looking forward to giving my best.

I can't predict what's going to happen, but I can tell you that I'm looking forward to fighting him again. I'm training really hard to put a final point on that subject.
