Can you imagine winning five matches at a world-class tournament for a gold medal without anybody scoring a point on you?

That’s exactly what Lucas Lepri (view profile) did at the IBJJF 2017 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship over the weekend.

The Alliance lightweight tore through his division, submitting three out of his five opponents with chokes from the back. In the semi-final, he racked up 18 points on the super technical Atos black belt Michael Liera Jr.

Lepri’s final with up-and-comer Marcio Andre was by far his closest match of the day, decided by a single two-point takedown. An advantage was awarded against Lepri during the match due to accumulated penalties, the only time any points were registered against him throughout any of his lightweight matches.

Lepri did the same thing at the 2016 World Championships, winning the gold medal in the lightweight division without any of his opponents scoring a point. As in the Andre match, JT Torres registered an advantage against him via penalty points in the semifinals.

One of the most technically complete athletes, Lepri’s well-rounded game makes him able to fight from any position.

Whether on the feet, on top or on bottom, his basic game relies on excellent positional control and eschews fancy techniques or tricks.
