The opening event of the 2016-2017 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour series was held in Los Angeles on September 3 & 4 last year. 

The two-day, gi and no-gi event, drew a number of big names and the results helped predict how things would play out for the rest of the circuit. 

Gabriel Arges and Xande Ribeiro emerged as gold medal winners, and they would go on to become two of the most prominent athletes in the battle for the season ranking. 

Other athletes who competed included Edwin Najmi (77kg champion), Luis Panza (110kg gold medal winner), Michael Musumeci (62kg champion) and Paulo Miyao in the only gi tournament he competed in since Worlds last year.

In the women's divisions, Nathiely de Jesus and Luiza Monteiro established themselves as champions in the 90kg and 62kg divisions respectively, as did Talita Alencar in the 55kg division. 

The event was notable for a number of reasons: 
• The clash between Joao Miyao and Michael Musumeci, which saw the American continue his winning streak over the Brazilian 
• Edwin Najmi tapping out the very tough Vitor Oliveira with a darce choke 
• Maxine Thylin of Gracie Humaita beating Tammi Musumeci in the 62kg division

With black belt gold medalists winning $2000 and 200 ranking points each, the LA Grand Slam truly kickstarted the road to World Pro.
