Leandro Lo beat Erberth Santos in the final event of the IBJJF 2016-2017 season today, confirming his position as no.1 in the ranking and as the winner of a $15,000 prize.

The two met in Sao Paulo at the Brazilian Nationals, fighting twice in the same day. Lo emerged winner in both battles in that tournament, and took the lead in the ranking. 

The two traded places at the top of the leaderboard, both chasing points at different tournaments. Erberth took double gold at the San Diego Open, while Leandro Lo did the same in Salvador, Bahia. 

The final face-off came in Curitiba, the last IBJJF event of the season in Brazil. 

Going into the tournament, Erberth was leading the ranking with 1480 points. Lo had 1456.5. 

Lo took double gold, winning both his weight class and the absolute (where he beat Erberth in the final). The two gold medals amounted to a points worth 67.5, meaning he advanced to 1524 points. 

Erberth, who took gold in the ultra heavyweight and silver in the absolute, will finish the season with 1511.5 points.

The final battle proved suitably climactic, with Erberth nearly catching Lo in a flying triangle but ultimately losing on points.
