The Brothers Both Hoping To Win The Same Division At Masters Worlds

The Moizinho brothers are ready to take over the Master 1 featherweight division at the 2017 IBJJF Master World Championship this weekend in Las Vegas.

The duo is relatively unknown, despite the fact that the younger brother, Osvaldo "Queixinho" Moizinho, is one of the best featherweights in the world.

Queixinho is a returning champion at Masters Worlds, having made his first run at the tournament a success last year.

It was the first time he was eligible to compete in the tournament, which is exclusive to grapplers 30 years of age and over. This year he hopes to repeat the accomplishment, perhaps meeting his older brother in the final.

Maybe you didn't know he had a brother, but in fact Aluizio Moizinho is a high-level competitor as well.

"We grew up together and throughout the years became best friends," Queixinho says. "He has also been someone that I always looked up to."

Aluizio only started to take competition seriously within the last year, as he had always had a career in Brazil. Now that he's in the States, he has taken his jiu-jitsu to the next level; he placed third in the masters division at the 2017 IBJJF Pan Championship, a signal that he's headed in the right direction.

Queixinho made it to the semifinals at Worlds this year and is a fixture in big tournaments, regularly placing on the podium (he took silver at Pans and gold at the 2016 No-Gi Worlds).

While Aluízio tends to reside in the master division, Queixinho is ready to fight in whichever division the toughest opponents are to be found. The difference he sees between fighting in the master category versus the adult category has little to do with his opposition.

"The biggest difference for me is the time," Aluízio says. "When I am fighting adult, I have a lot of time to get back up if I'm down on the scoreboard. But if I am fighting masters and I am behind on points, there is kind of no way to get back."

Last year, the Moizinho brothers fought in the same division, but Aluizio fell short of the podium. They've been training hard for this year's competition and managed to avoid letting any sibling rivalry spoil their growth.

This competition for both of the Moizinho brothers provides no stress, just simply pleasure to be competing and challenging themselves.

"Our training is very good; we make sure that we are training hard to get ready for the tournament, but we also make sure to always have fun," Aluízio says. "Like for example, [Queixinho] told me the other day: 'I am gonna hide my game from now on as we are in the same category.'"
