A look at the list of competitors here at Masters Worlds in Las Vegas reveals an interesting surprise. 

The elder generation of famous fighting families will take to the mat today to compete at the largest tournament for grapplers over the age of 30 in the world, including the fathers of famous grapplers such as Marcus "Buchecha" Almeida, Rafael Lovato Jr., and Mackenzie Dern.

Clayton Ferreira de Almeida, pictured at top, is the father of Buchecha and will compete in the Master 6 (over 55 years of age) ultra-heavyweight division. He trains out of Zenith Jiu-Jitsu in Buchecha's hometown of Santos, Barzil. 

Perhaps just as famous as his well-known daughter, Mackenzie Dern, Wellington "Megaton" Dias is a legend among Masters competitors and was the champion here in 2016. He will be up in action in the Master 5 featherweight division, but it's likely we'll also see him in the absolute. 



Looking to keep things rolling at Masters Worlds is the father-son duo of Rafael Lovato Sr. and Jr. The younger Lovato took double gold here on Thursday, winning the Master 1 super-heavyweight and openweight divisions. Lovato Sr., who turns 60 in November, competes in the Master 6 lightweight division. 

Finally Raul Jimenez, an Alliance black belt and the father of standout teen competitor Roberto Jimenez, will compete in the Master 3 super-heavyweight division. Jimenez is a European champion in the masters divisions as well as a bronze medalist here in 2016.
