Since its inception in 1994, the CBJJ Brazilian National Championships referred to as the Brasileiro, has been one of the fiercest Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments in the world. Only nine non-Brazilians have clinched a gold medal finish in 30 years of competition, and of the nine champions, only three have repeated the accomplishment.

The 2024 Brasileiro is scheduled for April 20-28 in Barueri, Brazil and marks the third IBJJF Grand Slam of the circuit. Last year at the 2023 IBJJF Brasileiro 10 Men's Champions and nine Women's Champions were named

Here's a full list and breakdown of every Non-Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competitor Who Has Won IBJJF Brasileiro

Every Non-Brazilian Who Has Won IBJJF Brasileiro

Rafael Lovato Jr. (2007 & 2013)

Rafael Lovato Jr., the first non-Brazilian to win a Brasileiro, had the world on his back in 2007 when he achieved a grand slam (winning all four IBJJF major titles in the same season) at 24 years old. Defeating Antonio Braga Neto and fellow star Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu en route to gold, the legendary Lovato has captivated Brazilian jiu-jitsu for almost 20 years. In 2013, Lovato returned to make history once again, becoming the first non-Brazilian to win a gold medal in the Brasileiro absolute division. Defeating Ricardo Evangelista via kimura submission in the finals, it would be only two years before another non-Brazilian would match Lovato's feat.

Lovato remains the only non-Brazilian to win a Brasileiro absolute title at black belt.

In 2023, Lovato secured double gold in the Master 1 division at Brazilian Nationals, becoming the first American to achieve the accomplishment.

Michael Wilson (2011)

Champion of the ultra-heavyweight division in 2011, Australia's Wilson won his title without a finals match taking place as both of his potential opponents were disqualified in the semi-finals for stalling.

Alexander Trans (2012)

Keeping the streak of non-Brazilians winning Brasileiro titles alive, Denmark's Alexander Trans won ultra-heavyweight gold in 2012. Defeating both of his opponents by points, Trans made history as the first European Brazilian Nationals champion.

Mackenzie Dern (2014 & 2015)

The daughter of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Wellington "Megaton" Dias, Mackenzie Dern proved to be one of the most formidable females in jiu-jitsu, winning back-to-back Brasileiro gold medals at featherweight. With her 2014 gold medal, Dern became the first non-Brazilian female champion of Brazilian Nationals.

Ffion Davies (2019)

One of the most dominant lightweight women in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Ffion Davies was promoted to black belt in late 2018 after taking home gold as a brown belt at the IBJJF World Championships. Just a few months later, Davies submitted Ana Carolina Schmitt in the finals to become the first European female athlete to win a Brasileiro gold medal.

Isaac Doederlein (2019 & 2023)

Alongside Davies, another non-Brazilian went on to win a title at the 2019 Brasileiro, Isaac Doederlein. Battling through five fights, Doederlein rallied for a razor-tight victory over Paulo Miyao in the finals, winning by a lone advantage. Returning to the tournament in 2023, Doederlein won his second Brasileiro gold medal with two submissions and a win over Alex Sodre in the finals.

Pablo Lavaselli (2022)

A multiple-time colored belt medalist at Brasileiro, the Argentinian Lavaselli won Brazilian Nationals in his first year at black belt, following up his gold medal as a brown belt the previous year. Lavaselli would win gold later in the year at American nationals and Jiu-Jitsu Con.

Mason Fowler (2022)

Joining Lavaselli as a 2022 Brasileiro champion, Fowler dominated his competition in the ultra heavyweight division, submitting each of his opponents via choke. Picking up victories over elite athletes Pedro Alex and Gutemberg Pereira, Fowler silenced any doubt of his proficiency in the gi.

Maria Malyjasiak (2023)

The most recent non-Brazilian Brasileiro champion, Malyjasiak came out on top of a tough medium-heavyweight bracket in 2023. Edging out Sabatha Lais via advantages in the Brazilian National finals, Malyjasiak ended her 2023 campaign with a silver medal at the IBJJF World Championships.
