Five-time world champion Romulo Barral found himself in trouble today at the Rio Grand Slam when he dislocated his shoulder midway through his opening match of the tournament.
The injury didn't stop him; following the injury Barral returned twice more, losing only to Xande Ribeiro in the semi-final by one advantage.
Barral was competing against Erick Barbosa and cruising to victory with a 10-point lead on the scoreboard when the injury occurred.
Setting up an armbar-triangle attack from top position, Barral hurt himself by simply posting his hand on the mat.
"I have really bad shoulders, and it pops out sometimes," says Barral, in good spirits following the match. "Old man problems!"
Barral continued the match, unable to lift his arm or even tie his belt properly at the end of the contest. He ran to the medics as soon as he exited the mat.
He came back for a match against Helton Junior of Cicero Costha, which he won by points, and the semi-final with Xande Ribeiro.
