Leo Vieira On Teaching Kids: 'It's Much Easier Than Adults'
CheckMat head coach Leo Vieira is busy preparing for his upcoming ADCC super-fight against Chael Sonnen but that doesn't mean he can't make time for his new kids-focused academy, DOJO.
The brand new academy, with a traditional martial arts theme, just opened in Seal Beach, CA and every evening when school gets out you'll find Leo passing on his vast wealth of knowledge to the next generation.
The idea for this school, is to introduce the sport to the new generation and instill a principle of respect. We see them right after their school day, so we try to bring situations from their school to the mat. We work on their confidence, honesty and loyalty. The things a lot of people forget about.Every morning you can find Vieira at his Signal Hill based school, CheckMat HQ. There he sharpens some of the best jiu-jitsu fighters in the sport like, Marcus Almeida, Marcelo Marfa and Michelle Nicolini. The school is world renowned and boast medals from the largest and most competitive tournaments in the sport.
Vieira himself has won ADCC two times and is building up his team to sweep the 2017 ADCC World Champiosnhips later this month. But when we ask who he enjoys training more, the adults or the kids, Leo's answer was an easy one.
The kids. I've been teaching kids a long time, I've never stopped. I would teach only kids if I could. Adults? competitors? Oh my gosh. Kids listen, adults never do.Watch Leo Vieira take on Chael Sonnen, September 23 LIVE only on FloGrappling!
