Weekend Recap: Vikings Conquer Black Belts, Erberth's Risk Pays Off
Here's your essential Monday morning digest of the most newsworthy moments from around the world of jiu-jitsu.

Erberth Santos wins Sao Paulo BJJ Pro, sends a message

Just a couple of weeks after the IBJJF World Championships most competitors are on vacation and enjoying a well-deserved rest, but not Erberth Santos.

The 2017 super heavyweight world champion took to the mats in Sao Paulo, Brazil to win the gold medal (and a cool R$4000 / $1210) at the Sao Paulo BJJ Pro.

In the message he posted on Instagram following the tournament he explained his desire to compete in Brazil in order to help keep the quality of the local scene high.

Today was a very important day, fighting an event after being a world champion was not easy! I say this because it would be much more comfortable for me to stay at home, without risking my title, but for my jiu-jitsu to grow I have to fight.

Another cool aspect is that we rarely see a world champion fighting in our country, I know that jiu-jitsu fans would like to see the champions taking risks and entering national events, I think this would help popularize jiu-jitsu as it is not everyone who can go abroad to watch the Worlds, Pans or other events where there are the world champions.

I am very grateful to this sport and I also know that it can help more people and children to escape from bad conditions and achieve a dignified life as I have achieved. As much as I can, I will do everything to compete near the fans, after all we have to leave the comfort zone and face our fears to win in life.

Tommy Langaker and Espen Mathiesen promoted to black belt

Norway's most successful competitors have just been promoted to black belt. Tommy Langaker and Espen Mathiesen, friends and training partners representing Kimura-Nova Uniao, were promoted by their coach Jose Carlos after a huge year.

Both of them won Europeans and Pans in stunning fashion, tearing through their divisions and winning every match by submission in both tournaments!

Relive the time the Vikings won the 2017 European Championships
