The International Judo Federation's 2017 World Senior Championship took place in Budapest, Hungary, from Aug. 28 to Sept. 2.

Judo and jiu-jitsu are closely related, and even though the two arts have diverged into very distinct sports with completely different rules and strategies, practitioners of both disciplines can still learn a lot from the other.

Those coming from jiu-jitsu will appreciate the big, match-ending throws and takedowns judo is famous for, but most often they're looking for the submission.

With that in mind, we've catalogued every submission finish we could find from the World Senior Championship and listed them below.

Judo permits athletes to attack for kansetsu-waza (joint locks) and shime-waza (chokes). Their time on the ground is limited, and they must always be looking to advance the position. Otherwise, referees will stand them back up.

The majority of submissions came as counters to failed throws, openings that judoka are highly proficient at exploiting.

Submissions that won gold

There were two divisions in which the overall winner was decided by submission, one male and one female.

The 81kg gold medal was decided by a submission, with Alexander Wieczerzak of Germany defeating Matteo Marconcini of Italy in less than two minutes with a choke.

Chizuru Arai of Japan beat Maria Perez of Puerto Rico in the women's 70kg final for gold using a nasty clock choke that started with a knee in the back of the neck.

Fastest submission

The fastest submission we found was Larisa Ceric of Bosnia-Herzegovina versus Kubra Kara of Turkey. Ceric used a clock choke to end the match in only 14 seconds!

Most unusual submissions

Nearly all the submissions we found fell into a few categories: strong armbars and collar chokes. We saw one reverse triangle, but what really stood out were Inbal Shemesh of Iran hitting a Peruvian neck tie on Ekaterina Valkova of Russia in the -63kg division and Helene Receveaux of France submitting Yunseo Ji with a loop choke from guard!
