According to the gospel of Gordon, there are two athletes at the pinnacle of technical jiu-jitsu: Roger Gracie... and Gordon Ryan. It's tough to argue against that point given the results. So how did they come to attain such status? Every athlete works hard - but are they working smart?

One component lies in having a 'layered approach - being good from everywhere and not relying on a specific set of skills or positions to secure a victory. Citing Roger Gracie, Godon argues the legendary jiu-jitsu athlete's career is proof that 'the foundation of the offensive is a solid defensive structure' and is having the knowledge and skill to work out of difficult positions denies any opportunity for success to those with a more limited range of attributes.
