Brown Belt Submission Highlight | 2023 Pans

Atos standout super heavyweight Nico Maglicic locked up double gold in the brown belt divisions on the second day of the 2023 IBJJF Pan Championships, defeating four of his six opponents via submission and racking up points along the way. That marks Maglicic’s second and third Pans gold as a brown belt, he took absolute gold at the tournament in 2022 after earning silver in the category.

Maglicic’s dominant outing helped to put Atos high up in the team standings. Atos started the day outside of the top 10, and finished Day 2 in second place with 41 team points, just 18 behind Dream Art, which finished in first place for the second consecutive day.

Maglicic’s efforts were aided by several high-performing Atos teammates, including Rafael Siveira and “Teteu” Matheus de Menezes, both of whom took gold in their respective categories.

The female brown belts also took the mat on Day 2, where it was the Giovanna Jara show once again. The force from Dream Art went two for two on submissions in the heavyweight division, and added another submission in her three-match run to absolute gold. Pans was a rare test for Jara, who commonly submits all of her opponents. Her semifinal match went to decision, while she won on points in the final.

Jara remains on track to earn a double Grand Slam this season; she took double gold at Euros in January.

Jara’s outing added 18 points to Dream Art’s monster lead in the female teams race. Dream Art sits at no.1 in the standings with 74 points, ahead of GF Team with 43.

Rawana Da Silva, the Dream Art roosterweight, also contributed to the team’s points lead with a gold medal.

The Dream Art purple belts also shone, and none more so than Beatriz Gutierrez, the lightweight champion who earned double gold. She secured four submissions in six matches. She was supported by her light featherweight teammate, Thanyara Victoria, who won the light featherweight division and took third in the absolute.

Early in the day, all eyes were on Cole Abate, the Art Of Jiu-Jitsu prodigy who entered his first major tournament at the brown belt level after winning Euros at purple belt earlier this season. Abate submitted four of his five opponents with chokes from the back in the lightweight division, showing off his impressive movement along the way. In the semifinal, he defeated Thiago Saboia, the 2023 brown belt lightweight European champ. The final, a match against Mateus de Moraes, came down to the wire, with Abate winning on advantages after pressuring Moraes’ durable guard.
