The IBJJF Master World Championships is always a spectacle of talent, showcasing the world's finest veteran grapplers. This year, the Master World Championship features familiar faces from the jiu-jitsu and MMA worlds. Here's a look at some of the top competitors to watch!

Master 2 Division

Demetrius "Mighty Mouse" Johnson

Team/Association: AMC Pankration

Weight Division: Featherweight

Achievements & Background:

The current One Championship Flyweight Champion and a former UFC Flyweight Champion, "Mighty Mouse," set a remarkable record with eleven consecutive title defenses, underscoring his dominance in the division. Renowned for his unparalleled speed, technique, and versatility inside the octagon, Johnson boasts several submission finishes in the octagon. Following his illustrious UFC tenure, he transitioned to ONE Championship.

Johnson is set to compete at 10:40am on Mat 9 on Thursday, 8/31.

 

Karen Antunes

Team/Association: CheckMat

Weight Division: Featherweight

Known for her dynamic guard passing, Antunes won the IBJJF World Championships and Pan Championships in 2018, with a second-place finish at Pans in 2016. In 2021, the CheckMat representative won gold at the IBJJF World Master and American National Championships.

Karen is set to fight at 1:53pm on Mat 22 on Thursday, 8/31.

Master 3 Division

Bruno Bastos

Team/Association: LEAD BJJ

Weight Division: Ultra Heavy 

The founder of the Bruno Bastos association and LEAD BJJ team, Bastos is a multiple-time IBJJF Master World Champion. On the master scene, Bastos has won every grand slam event, although not in the same year. Additionally, Bastos is a highly talented no-gi grappler, qualifying for the 2009 ADCC World Championships and winning several IBJJF Master World No-Gi Championships.

 Bastos is set to compete at 1:42 pm on Mat 29 on Friday, 9/1.

Master 4 Division

Roberto Godoi

Team/Association: G13 BJJ USA

Weight Division: Super Heavy

A veteran competitor and instructor, Godoi is perhaps one of the most decorated grapplers competing this weekend with three Masters Worlds gold medals.

Godoi is often celebrated as a significant contributor to the growth and development of jiu-jitsu in Brazil, and a pioneer of the half guard game.

Godoy is set to compete at 1:14 pm on Mat 29 on Friday, 9/1.

Master 6 Division

Wellington "Megaton" Dias

Team/Association: Gracie Humaitá

Weight Division: Lightweight

The father of ADCC Champion Mackenzie Dern, Megaton is a renowned instructor and competitor. The only jiu-jitsu athlete to have competed in every single edition of the IBJJF World Championships, Megaton has finished on the podium at Worlds four times and won the Pan American Championship twice and the European Championship three times, respectively. In 2023 he became the first coral belt to compete in an adult black belt division at the World Championships.

Dias is set to compete at 4:02 pm on Mat 31 on Friday, 9/1.
