Breaking Down The Rankings Changes After The No-Gi European Championships

We have a brand new batch of no-gi world rankings, and with the IBJJF No-Gi European Championships happening over the weekend (among other events) there has been some movement in certain divisions. In what will be an ongoing series, here is an explainer behind that movement so you can better understand why we have moved certain athletes.

FIND THE RANKINGS HERE

Divisions

Men's 135lbs

  • Junny Ocasio held serve at Euros, winning light-feather with victories over Lucas Feitosa and Valor Boyer. Boyer is just outside the top-15 here, but is on the radar. Also just outside the top-15 is Shay Montague, who won roosterweight. Since our 135 rankings consider anyone below 135lbs, spots can be a little harder to come by until you truly stamp yourself among the elite.

Men's 145lbs

  • Julian Espinoza of Renzo Gracie has re-entered the rankings at 145lbs after winning no-gi Euros in a tough field, beating ADCC veteran Sam McNally in the finals. Espinoza also had a good run at East Coast Trials where he advanced to day two before losing to Crelinsten. He has bounced in and out of the lower-third of the top-15 the last month or so, but that McNally win helps a lot. Unfortunately, we expected Ash Williams but he didn't end up competing. Still, he's been very active lately so no risk to his ranking.

Men's 155lbs

  • 155 can be a little awkward to rank because it doesn't line up as exactly as other weights with a division in the IBJJF or ADCC. On the regional/super-fight scene, however, Max Hanson has been as active as possible and spent the weekend winning the SOGI championship with all submissions. He's a guy who is close to the top-15 at 170 and now rises up due to his consistency and activity levels.

Men's 170lbs

  • There wasn't any movement, but there were results in the IBJJF middleweight division at Euros. Langaker went on a great run, beating Oliver Taza, Tarik Hopstock, and Mateusz Szczecinski in a row for gold. Though there was a deep field with great action, everything fell according to the rankings anyway so no one gets shuffled like crazy. Langaker and Taza will rematch at Polaris soon, if Tommy wins again then he stands to rise with his increased level of activity.

Men's 185lbs

  • Sebastian Rodriguez beat Clay Mayfield in the Euros finals, avenging a loss from a few weeks before at Trials, so they swap numbers 13 and 15. Sebastian has the deeper resume overall anyway, but Mayfield has really had a great few months here - including nearly beating #3 Lo in the Pan finals on a controversial no-call on a guard pass.

Men's 205lbs

  • We took out William Tackett and Hunter Colvin because they are much more active at 185lbs. With that, two spots opened up and they are replaced by Igor Tanabe and Paul Ardila. Tanabe is focusing on an MMA career but he will still appear in grappling matches, including notching a victory over Jacob Couch earlier this year. Ardila won ADCC Trials again, and the only thing holding back his ranking at this point is activity level. Two guys who are just outside the rankings are Santeri Lillius (who won Trials and placed 3rd at Euros) and Javier Barter (beat Lillius on his way to gold-silver at Euros). Cool note on Barter, he is the first Panamanian athlete to win an IBJJF major at black belt.

Men's Heavyweight

  • There wasn't any change in the heavyweight rankings, but we still can talk about why that is. Heikki Jussila won the open class at Euros but lost in ultra-heavyweight to Felipe Figueiredo Mauricio - who isn't that active as a competitor on the world level. We're going to keep an eye on Mauricio and see if he can begin a serious campaign, at which point he will be easier to rank. For now, especially since he won the absolute and won Trials again by beating Big Dan, Heikki stays at 14th.

Women's 115lbs

  • Mara Kelly of BJJ Revolution Team won the Euros. She's been ranked before and is very close to being ranked again, but the field at Euros just wasn't deep enough to push her over the edge yet. Another good win, and she will be back to the top-15.

Women's 125lbs

  • #8 Adele Fornarino keeps her ranking by winning Euros and beating Ashley Bendle in the finals. Fornarino is someone who is a very popular pick to come out of Asian Trials for ADCC 2024, and with performances like this it is easy to see why.

Women's 135lbs

  • Maria Claudio Almeida Silva of JS Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu won her division at Euros, but the field wasn't deep enough to get her ranked. Still, she is now on our radar for the time being.

Women's 145lbs

  • Probably the closest decision in this new update was whether to push Rosa Walsh into the top-15 at 145lbs. She won Euros and continues to be a force as a new black belt, but she is still new to this level and these names so for now she's just on the outside looking in.

Women's Heavyweight

  • We try our best to rank athletes who have been active in the last 365 days, so unfortunately we have to remove Kendall Reusing. Reusing has been out since her leg injury at ADCC last year, but may be close to a return. As soon as she comes back, she will factor back into the rankings based on her resume. Now, Euro double silver medalist and Euro Trials winner Ana Svendsen enters the top-15.
