Griffith, Frankland Win Brown Belt Double Gold At The 2023 No-Gi Worlds

Luke Griffith added a capstone to his 2023 campaign with a spotless all-submissions run to double gold at the 2023 IBJJF World No-Gi Championships. The Team New Wave representative pushed his record to 43-1 on the year - with a jaw dropping 43 submission victories.

He and Australia's Nadia Frankland stand tallest among the impressive class of brown belts who earned gold medals at the tournament, capturing the absolute gold in their respective divisions.

Griffith and Frankland spearheaded internationally diverse brown belt absolute podiums, which featured representatives from Poland, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, the UK and Germany. This is the second consecutive year in which the brown belt podium has been colored by international standouts. The 2022 brown belt No-Gi Worlds male absolute podium featured athletes from four different countries.

Brown belt day today was packed with great matches, dynamic action, and dramatic finishes across all divisions, as the best brown belts from around the world converged onto one tournament.

Yigit Hanay, one of Europe's fastest rising prospects, won his featherweight division in exciting fashion with a submission in the finals by way of rear naked, capping off a 5-0 run at Worlds that included a submission over ADCC Trials finalist Cam Donnelly. With the second European Trials looming, he will be riding a lot of momentum coming in after this.

In a division that included favorites like Cameron Mellott and Mourece Ramirez - two of the most highly regarded competitors in any brown belt bracket - it was DreamArt's Marcos Gomes walking away champion after defeating both. This was a huge performance for the young Brazilian, who displayed great strategy in winning close against both opponents.

The upper weights at Worlds showed incredible depth, with world-class matches and performances from many of the big men. Poland's Marcin Maciulewicz took home gold at super-heavy, Atos's resident Samurai Takeshiro Tanino Kauan Yuuki won heavyweight after becoming purple belt champion in the gi this year, and CheckMat's Dory Aoun navigated a talented bracket to another world gold at the colored belts.

In a stacked bracket with a lot of wild fights, Mona Bailey took first place among the brown belt lightweight women after defeating Josefine Modig in the finals. There was a ton of crazy action in the women's divisions, including from Atos's Laura Sileci, Jaidyn Mueller, and Ashley Reyes who defeated divisional favorite Yazmin Castro with a triangle in the finals.
