IBJJF Updates Rules Around 50-50 Lapel, Foot Locks, & More
The IBJJF has announced new rules updates in 2024, including further regulation of the 50-50 position, foot lock rules, and more

The IBJJF has announced new rules for its competitions, set to go into effect immediately beginning in the 2024 season. There are no major overhauls, but rather several small tweaks designed to promote action while maintaining safety in competition, as well as a few procedural changes regarding the disqualification process.

The rules, going into effect immediately, include;
- Athletes in 50-50 with a lapel or belt grip have 20 seconds to pursue progression before being penalized for passivity.
- Athletes in brown and black belt divisions (including adults and masters in gi and no-gi) can now apply a straight ankle lock turning in either direction; there is no more "wrong way".
- If your hair dye or makeup stains an opponent's gi, you may be disqualified.
- An athlete who is promoted to a belt but does not yet meet the age requirement is allowed to continue competing at their previous rank. This does not apply for athletes who were promoted before meeting the required time spent at a previous belt.
- An athlete must compete in the division that aligns with their sex assigned at birth.
- If an athlete is disqualified after their semifinal but before the final has taken place, their opponent will now advance in the bracket instead.
