BJJ Stars, the biggest super fight series in grappling, is back with what may be their biggest card ever, featuring stars like Mica Galvão, Adam Wardzinski, Diogo Reis, and more - and it is all going down April 26th in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Tune in this weekend to see major gi super matches that will determine the top dogs in the world and the explosive Grand Prix featuring eight of the best middleweights in the world.

The top gi match of the evening will be between two top featherweights in Meyram Maquine and Diogo Reis, both of whom have been stellar on the BJJ Stars 15 mats. The two champions are 1-1 in their careers against each other and now settle things under the bright Sao Paulo lights. In 2024, Meyram won the IBJJF World Championship at -70kg and Diogo won the ADCC World Championship at -65kg, now they meet in one of the most consequential matches of the year heading into gi Worlds later this year.

Meyram brings a strong judo base, incredible rapid passing, and lightning quick back takes that were on full display on his run to both a World gold medal and an open class bronze in 2024 at the Pyramid. Diogo, by contrast, uses more wrestling and is more likely to go to his guard but he also prefers to be on top passing - and has developed his arm triangles into a dangerous system. Meyram may be a little naturally larger since Diogo has spent time recently at light-feather but Diogo has also been more active in competition.

In a very important co-main event, reigning IBJJF Absolute champion Erich Munis will take on the Polish Butterfly Adam Wardzinski as Wardzinski continues the best run of his career. Adam has won Worlds, the Crown, Euros, and Pans in a row and now turns his attention to his first trip in Brazil and the toughest opponent of this campaign yet in Munis. Wardzinski is currently #2 pound-for-pound and if he wins this match he will take over the number one spot.

Munis is a tall, long guard player who draws people into his sticky grips and lapel positions. If he gets the chance, his submission of choice has become the Ezekiel choke over the last few years. Adam has become the best known butterfly guard player in the game, mixing it well with knee slides, heavy mount pressure, and more.

Gabi Pessanha and Tayane Porfirio will be facing off in a battle between world open class champions. Gabi is truly the best ever for women's grappling, having won nearly two hundred matches in a row as she has dominated her way to double gold at every IBJJF major since the Pandemic. The only honest analysis can be that Gabi has lapped the field and beaten the game when it comes to women's jiu-jitsu - but a match with an opponent who is as strategically sound and powerful as Tayane must be respected.

Tayane has the physical size and power to hang with Pessanha, something that is kind of rare for the Cidade de Deus powerhouse. The next step is dealing with Gabi's incredible technical acumen, and we'll see on the night how that goes, but this is one of those matches where Gabi's opponent at least has a path to victory.

Besides the key super matches, fans can also look forward to a really wild Grand Prix featuring some of the biggest names in pro grappling. It's going down at -83kg (~183lbs) under ADCC rules, with eight men vying for the championship and the R$50,000 prize that comes along with it. The eight men participating will be (with numbers according to FloGrappling's no-gi world rankings);

  • #2 Jonnatas Gracie
  • #4 Mica Galvão
  • #8 Izaak Michell
  • #11 Roberto Jimenez
  • #14 Jon Blank
  • #15 Oliver Taza
  • Elijah Dorsey
  • Rafael Paganini

Mica has become one of BJJ Stars' most consistently exciting draws, with matches and moments that have wowed fans every time he takes to the Sao Paolo mats. The 2024 Super Grand Slam champion now jumps up in weight where he will face some of the best in a one night tournament. In the mix will also be Who's Next Champ Izaak Michell, WNO Champion Jonnatas Gracie, 'El Natural' Roberto Jimenez, and ADCC place-winner Jon Blank. Whoever wins will have gone through three world-class opponents in one night, there's no easy path here with a bracket of this quality.

The last super match I want to call out for fans is between dynamic big men Leo Ferreira and Hygor Brito. Leo is back after a few years away from major competitions but he was a very talented Alliance brown belt who is now much more muscular and powerful. He made the open class podium at Euros and looked awesome. Here he takes on Hygor, who brings maybe the most flexible guard for any black belt super-heavyweight in the active competition scene. It's going to be a serious scrap between these two with a lot on the line for them leading into Worlds.

For fans in Brazil, please take note that this is the first time that fans can exclusively catch BJJ Stars on FloGrappling - there will be no option for PPV.
