2025 IBJJF Worlds Day One Recap: DreamArt Takes Opens, Dream Team & More

We are done with day one of the 2025 IBJJF World Championship and the Pyramid was on fire with tons of crazy matches, upsets, and new champs crowned. For all the fans who want an update on all the biggest stories from the opening brackets, we got you covered. All of the action will kick off again Friday at 9:30am pacific and then black belts finally take the mats over the weekend.

DreamArt Has The Two Best Blue Belts On Earth

DreamArt super-heavyweights Renan Martins and Agatha Nigro won double gold at Worlds today, both showing stunning dominance in different ways. Both managed seven wins and no losses, and racked up some serious team points for their Brazilian-based squads with their performances. Renan was very dynamic in his matches, using big athletic moves to attack all the time and now stands as the top male blue belt for the season. Agatha, after coming close last year, now stamps her blue belt career with double gold at Worlds. She used that steady game to turn up the head against her opponents and drag them into her pressure-filled game. It was a performance that was largely free from mistakes - a very promising trait for the rising colored belt.

Purple Belt Women Take Center Stage

Hazel Butcher-Salazar stood supreme to end the day, claiming double gold after winning the heavyweight and open class. The young purple belt from Alliance was on fire with a very dynamic game for an upper-weight and she was a force once she hit the open. With double gold at Pans and Worlds, along with the juvenile blue belt grand slam last year, Hazel deserves more conversation about one of our best up-and-comers.

Eliza Nascimento claimed purple belt World gold after another tough finals match with her rival this season, Hungary's Nikolett Kis. Eliza, of Marcio Andre Jiu-Jitsu, relied on her guard to get her through this tournament and I think this 2025 year has been really valuable experience for her as she continues to develop into a world class grappler. Eliza would go on to take absolute bronze as well, which is very impressive for the lightweight. In fact, her and Nikolett both made the podium in the open class with Nikolett taking silver - both women losing to Hazel along the way.

Dream Team Update

Emily Leyva finally brought home that world gold medal that has eluded her with a showcase performance here in the Pyramid today. She had "This Is My Day" on her gi and it felt like that, as she sliced through tough competition with her usual focus on submissions. That gold brings important team points with it as Atos sits in second place, five points behind Fratres. Emily would tack on an open class bronze, which as a light-feather is a true testament to her toughness and technique.

Along with Emily, Bia Alves also added a gold medal at blue belt middle in her first year with the squad. She's been winning at the blue belt level for the last few seasons but finally tacks on her world gold medal. Alexa Herse, one of the team's predominant blue belt members, navigated her way to the finals before falling by a narrow 2 point margin to GF Team's Isis Maciel. Another newer member, India Brisby from Australia, added a gold medal of her own after a really impressive showing at Pans earlier this year. The squad delivered today in a big way towards their team title goals.

Which Blue Belts Showed Out At Worlds?

I think the most impressive run of the day belonged to Max Schwartz of AOJ. He's been training a long time and had some really tough matches to pull out the gold medal here so for him to get it done had to be very gratifying. The finals match was back-and-forth until a pass at the end solidified things for Schwartz. He got his purple belt on the podium and we're excited to see what's next for him. That capped off six matches to win it all, which I believe is the most of anyone at this tournament yet.

Also on the list for most impressive had to be Joao Victor of CheckMat who showed off a powerful and exciting style all the way to gold at medium-heavy. His whole run was electric but especially his semifinal where he took out the one seed in dominant fashion, by submission while up on points. It was also announced today that Joao will be making his WNO debut in just a few weeks on the undercard, so there's a bright future building for the young colored belt.

Jake Holman won medium-heavy in a surprising but thorough performance, including a very close decision in the finals (that later became a DQ after post-match actions). The Marcio Andre student is unlike many on this list - he didn't begin training until he was already an adult and is now 27 which is on the older side for a colored belt world champion. It's a great result for the guy who had five hard matches to take home first place.

Two New AOJ Black Belts

The brown belt action was very limited today, with only the three lightest weights from the women going. Still it was not without a notable event, as Ashlee Funegra won three matches for gold and earned her black belt on the podium alongside her sister. Interestingly, her sister Mia will now make her official black belt debut in just two days - you can catch that exclusively on FloGrappling. Ashlee used her deadly open guard and steady top game to constantly stay a step ahead and ultimately dominate the competition.

What To Expect Tomorrow

Tomorrow should be intense as we set the table for the final days of black belts. I've been saying all season that the brown belt women and juvenile blue males are my favorite colored belt classes and they both go tomorrow - along with the brown belt men, rest of the juveniles, and a few purple belt men's classes. We'll also know the participants in the open class for black belts tomorrow. Pay special attention to Sarah Galvao, Helena Crevar, and Lillian Marchand tomorrow - you won't be disappointed.
