Black Belt Divisions

Ronaldo Junior beats Jefferson Goteu by an advantage, he's won Worlds as a black belt in no-gi and now wants one in the gi as well. Tainan Dalpra takes the mat for his quarter and is able in very short order to navigate to the back and he's going to get the tap. That's the first match at middleweight tomorrow. The big boys are rolling now too, with heavy, super-heavy, and ultra-heavy for the men rolling out now.

Lis Clay back out after a nasty foot injury in the absolute. Larissa Martins of DreamArt enters a foot lock immediately against her, but Lis counters. She has the upper hand and gets the tap after a scream tap from Larissa. Janaina out to take on BSM, this one is basically a world final. Early on Janaina gets into a leg entanglement and forces the foot lock, BSM eating it. She survives, she escapes, but is down. BSM manages to get back on top and even the score. It's all knotted up late. Janaina laces a reverse de la worm guard, she sits BSM down, that's an advantage. That is the deciding factor here, great, technical match.

Alexandre de Jesus uses a tactical game to take out Big Breakfast. de Jesus, aka Robinho, is one of the quietest killers in the game, and now he's into the semifinals. Andy is up for his quarter, taking on Kevin Mahecha. Kevin is being aggressive on the legs but Andy uses that to find the back and finish. 3-0 with 3 submissions, no points scored against him so far. On the next mat, Matheus Gabriel and Pedro Maia go to decision - and it's Gabriel! After a lot of surgeries, he's back on the podium. 

Few submissions are rolling now. BSM gets the triangle win. Matheus Luna gets an armbar. Cassia Moura now facing Lari Campos of AOJ in a semifinal. They are tied after a pair of sweeps but Lari racks up a lot of advantages on a deep triangle with armlocks and sweeps thrown in. They review it on the video and agree - and that'll do it. Campos scores the upset, she's in the finals! 2018 World Champ Matheus Gabriel will also be advancing over Fabyury 8-4. Really smart match from him. He's got Pedro Maia next round.

Now Diego's brother Alex is up. There's some early scoring confusion but Sodre leads by multiple advantages. Now Cole sweeps his way up! He is up but there's a lot of match left. Over the next eight minutes, Sodre holds double lasso grips for about seven and then Cole holds double pants grips for the last minute. Cole wins and makes the podium here after going 0-1 last year in his debut.

Kennedy Maciel out now in his quarterfinal against Diego Sodre. Kennedy pulls an advantage out of a near-pass. Sodre sweeps to top, now he's in control. With less than forty seconds, Kennedy forces his way up and scores his own sweep to lead. Now with no time, Diego sends it on a deep loop choke - he gets it! Kennedy falls asleep in the choke as time expires, that is a submission win and Diego is in the semifinals. Finish of the day by far.

Good one coming up, Meyram Alves taking on World silver Ademir Barreto in a finals rematch from last year. Meyram scores his early two but Barreto right on a kneebar! It's tight but Meyram eats it and escapes, wow. Still, Barreto is now on top and ahead on advantages. Meyram sweeps up, but gets caught in that kneebar again! He still doesn't tap! One minute left, Ademir leads. Meyram comes up, he's in a rear body lock as Ademir fights his way up. After three or four grueling mat returns, it's too much and Meyram keeps him down for two. Crazy match.

Andy Murasaki up now against Megaton Dias. What a legend, Megaton here for another Worlds. Andy wins, as expected, but Megaton still the man. Alex Sodre and Eduardo Granzotto up now after Granzotto upset the hokage earlier. Alex will advance, he faces Cole Abate soon in quarterfinal action. Very patient guard play was the key there for him.

Cassia Moura is making her black belt debut at Worlds against Emilia Pakulski of Unity. Kennedy Maciel, son of Cobrinha, snatches a tight ankle lock and he will advance over Gui Fernandes. As expected, Isaac Doederlein has decided not to compete this weekend. Rumor has it he could be in the UFC's upcoming reality show. Cole will get his hand raised against Sebastian Serpa, now he will wait for Alex Sodre or Granzotto. Diego Sodre, for his credit, takes the back of Cleber Clandestino and scores the submission win. That's really impressive.

Mia is back out in her quarterfinal, also on the mat is Diogo Reis's quarterfinal against Jefferson Veloso as well as Meyram Alves in pursuit of consecutive world golds. All three are able to advance, the action is rolling along. Diogo is into the semifinals and his rivalry match against Pato is still alive for tomorrow. Meyram scores a pair of takedowns along the way to his victory. Cole Abate is out now against the very tough Serpa. He goes up on a pair of advantages early on a double pull and a near pass.

Fabricio Andrey is up now, facing Eduardo Granzotto of CheckMat. Granzotto doing well early, he leads by two after coming up out of a submission attempt. He tries to sweep but Eduardo stands and they double pull, now Eduardo sweeps again! Fabricio is way up on advantages but can't find any scores. That'll do it, massive upset over Fabricio Andrey here early by Granzotto. There's actually a lot of upsets happening here all at once - Brenda Larissa and Shelby Murphey both just lost so the 2, 3, and 4 seeds all leave here with a combined 0-3 record. 

Quarters are starting to trickle out from early divisions. Jalen Fonacier is back up against Oziel Santos - wow he is on fire today! He finds the submission in under two minutes and as a rookie black belt he is on the podium. What a show through day one for him. Shoya Ishiguro also qualifies for the world podium, no surprise after the great year he has had. He beats Marcos Gomes to advance. Thalison Soares will advance and he sees Jalen Fonacier - those are our top 2 ranked roosters in the world.

A lot more stars taking the mats with early elimination rounds done, including Diego Pato, Diogo Reis, and Thalison Soares. Pato facing Leo Villela, who beat Cole last year at this tournament. Pato is having trouble finishing him but is going to win 16-2 after dominating positionally. His rival Baby Shark is up 4-2 over Pato's teammate Gustavo Ogawa. One minute left, Gustavo ties it up on points but is down by an advantage. Baby Shark will win and advance but Gustavo made him work hard for that one.

We have another no-show at rooster, this time women's rooster, as 3-seed Jhenifer Aquino doesn't weigh in. Mayssa is out, the smallest juggernaut in jiu-jitsu, and she is rolling early with a dominant submission win. That already qualifies her for the podium. Another big one about to happen when Mia Funegra makes her black belt debut against returning silver medalist Amanda Canuto. Mia sweeps, she passes, she looks incredible here against the #3 ranked woman in the world - and there's another 4 for mount. She enters into the armbar, but Amanda is able to navigate and escape. Still, Mia will win 12-0 in a stunning debut.

Unfortunately European champion Yuri Hendrex has missed weight, he is done at rooster before he can begin. Over on the other mat next to them, Brasileiros champion Rodrigo Otavio loses his first match against Oziel Santos! We just began and both of those champions are out of the bracket already. Pan champion and top ranked rooster Jalen Fonacier is up now, he is inverting his way to the back - and he snatches the collar for a submission win.

After a short break for the award's ceremony, action is back with the black belt weights. We will see the men's divisions roll through the quarters, with semifinals beginning the day tomorrow, and women's divisions going all the way up to the finals, which also happen tomorrow.

Black Belt Absolute

Men's absolute semifinals time. Erich Munis is taking on Luis Cantereira of Fratres. Erich has been on a roll today with his submissions but in this match is much more measured in his control. He sweeps, passes, and uses his lapel open guard well to rack up enough points to win and make the finals. He's the favorite for double gold. On the other side, Gutemberg and Scooby are battling. It's close late with 3 penalties each - Gutemberg scores a major sweep to mount! He can't stabilize but that's huge for the score. With thirty seconds left the mat referee signals for Gutemberg's fourth penalty but the side referees overrule. Gutemberg will win a dramatic one. That's the open class finals, Gutemberg vs Erich.

Absolute semifinals are up now, this is going to be intense. First up Gabi Pessanha is up against Lis Clay and just like that Gabi taps her. It was a straight ankle lock and Lis is limping badly. We'll have to see if she is available for the division later today. On the other mat, Tayane uses her slow, patient game to rack up enough points to advance. It's a major rematch in the finals there with a ton on the line for both women. I can't wait.

In another quarter, Tayane is out against Yara in a critical match for the open. Tayane is in early on a pass - and racks up a bunch of advantages. Her pressure passing is looking awesome. She mounts! she will win 4-0 and advance to the semifinals, she's looking as good as ever. On the other mat, Gabi Pessanha turns in another quick submission with a one minute cross choke. Are we going to see a rematch there?

We have a couple fun matches going on now. This Gutemberg vs Anderson Munis match happening now is really crazy - Gutemberg comes up with two minutes left to sweep and even the score. He's really turning it on here, he manages to find the submission and advance in an early candidate for match of the tournament. Both guys put a lot in that match. On the next mat over, Marcus Scooby is rematching Marcos Carrozzino - they had that infamous double DQ earlier in the season at Euros in the open class finals. Scooby takes down Marcos and uses some awesome top pressure to get the win here. Gutemberg vs Scooby semifinal.

Things are getting started here at the 2025 IBJJF World Championships with the open class as the black belts take the mats. A few fun matches getting going here including Elder Cruz and Lucas Montalvao trading takedowns. Elder ultimately turns it on late with a double leg into a back take that nets him the win. Gabi Pessanha is out now to begin her run here in the absolute - it took about twelve seconds for her to submit Nadia Frankland with a toe hold out of a berimbolo. Crazy, she looks dialed on.
