2025 IBJJF Worlds Day Three Recap: Black Belts Put On A Show In The Pyramid

For all the fans who want an update on all the biggest stories from the black belt brackets, we got you covered. All of the action will kick off again Saturday at 9:30am pacific with the final day of Worlds.

Open Class Finals Are Set

Both open class finals are set for tomorrow - including one of jiu-jitsu's most anticipated matchups in Gabi Pessanha vs Tayane Porfirio. Tayane was the woman who finally snapped Gabi's streak of 166 victories when she won by points in Brazil earlier this year. Now, Gabi gets her chance at revenge. Gabi was honestly kind of frightening in her run today - her longest match was only one minute and everyone opponent left with some kind of injury they did not enter with. Tayane, to her credit, looked as good as she ever has, especially in the semifinals when she beat Yara Soares. Her pressure passing has reached a new level, which is crazy because she was already elite at that. Gabi and Tayane will also meet in the super-heavy final, so we get to see this anticipated bout two time tomorrow.

We have our men's final as well, as Erich Munis will be taking on Gutemberg Pereira. Pereira had a crazier run, starting with his quarterfinal against Anderson Munis. It was back and forth, off the mats and all over the place. Finally, it was Gutemberg storming back for the submission win at the end. After that, it was another wild one as he took on Marcus Scooby. They battled close but a near sweep and mount gave Big Berg the needed criteria for victory. Erich cruised through with three wins and two submissions, and his hardest match was against familiar foe Luis Cantereira. Erich has really made an effort to increase his submission rate and it shows. He is the odds on favorite for double gold tomorrow but there's a lot of jiu-jitsu still to come.

All four athletes in the open class finals are still alive for double gold in their divisions.

Mia Funegra Promoted Thursday, In Finals Sunday

Talk about a record - Mia Funegra has been a black belt a matter of DAYS and she is in the black belt world finals. The teen phenom had a lot of expectations on her coming into the day but she has surpassed them with a stellar performance so far. She began by taking out a returning finalist in Amanda Canuto by a dominant 12-0 score. She followed that up with another submission win over Ann Wright before taking out Jessica Caroline to make the finals. Caroline is world class and even has wins over Mayssa, so this is a real statement from the AOJ product. In the finals she will face Andressa Giurai.

Grand Slam Watch

Five people entered the tournament with the opportunity to win all 4 majors at black belt - and all five are still going in the tournament. Tainan Dalpra, Adam Wardzinski, Janaina Lebre, Gabi Pessanha, and Diego Pato have all yet to take a loss at the IBJJF Worlds.

The one who really had to battle the most adversity on day one of black belt was Janaina, who had a razor close semifinal against Brianna Ste-Marie. They were 1-1 in their last two meetings before this pivotal showdown and it was clear they are very evenly matched. Lebre would secure another advantage to win with mere seconds left and she now gets ready to face divisional queen Luiza Monteiro. Luiza retired in the Pyramid after winning worlds last year, now she is back to reclaim her throne and prove herself all over again. Her work has been stellar, especially her passing and use of the knee cut.

Tainan Dalpra also turned in a flawless day in his own right, all submissions with no points given up. He's won everything this year but came away from the final two Worlds without a title. He's been to the mountaintop before, can he reach it again in 2025? Adam Wardzinski is also back to the semifinals, as his cindarella run to a Grand Slam and beyond continues.

Men's Featherweight Madness

Is any division ever more chaotic than men's feather? Every year we see upsets, finishes we never saw coming, and history made - and today was no exception. Returning champion Meyram Alves led the way with his judo-inspired takedown game - and needed everything in his arsenal when he rematched his finals opponent from last year in Ademir Barreto. Barreto was in on several deep kneebars but Meyram escaped and scored his winning points very late off of a dramatic mat return. First up for him tomorrow? Cole Abate, who made his first podium at black belt in the gi with wins over Sebastian Serpa and Alex Sodre. There was also a major upset on that side of the field when unranked Eduardo Granzotto took out #2 Fabricio Andrey first round. The other half of the bracket had maybe the finish of the day - down on an advantage, Diego Sodre put Kennedy Maciel to sleep with a deep loop choke that got the finish right as time expired. A true buzzer beater sends Diego to the medal rounds where he takes on Crown finalist Joao Bisnaga.

Elisabeth Clay Makes Her First World Final At Black Belt

One of the best days had to belong to Elisabeth Clay. After making it all the way to the semifinals of the absolute, she faced Gabi Pessanha and the larger Gabi really muscled on a toe hold for a quick tap. Lis left the mat limping with some questions about her return - but she looked as good as ever. She is into her first black belt world finals after three close wins over familiar opponents, including a brutal submission win in her quarterfinal against Larissa Martins. On the other side it will be Thalyta Lima, the one seed, also making the finals and only one can emerge champion in this division.

Is It Finally Andy's Year?

Tough to do better than Andy Murasaki did today, as the Atos lightweight went 3-3 with submissions and gave up no points on his way to advancing. After three consecutive silvers, Andy is the favorite in the division but there's only killers left. He will face Six Blades submission hunter and 2025 Euro champ Leo Souza next. On the other side, world champ Matheus Gabriel is back on the podium for the first time in a while as he advanced to the semifinals with strong performances all day. He's had injury issues and surgeries so it's really cool to see someone so talented return to form. Next up for him is Alexandre Robinho, who is very underratedly good in gi and no-gi.
