What's Happening In Jiu-Jitsu

-The third woman has been confirmed for the CJI 2 $100,000 bracket, Ana Carolina Vieira. Vieira won the -65kg division at the 2024 ADCC World Championships. Only one spot remains.

-BJJ Stars announced their (almost) complete card for their next event happening later this month, including the 8 men in the absolute Grand Prix. They are:

  • Fabricio Andrey
  • Roberto Cyborg
  • Elioenai Braz
  • Pedro Marinho
  • Devhonte Johnson
  • Josh Saunders
  • Javier Zaruski
  • Haisam Rida

-Shoya Ishiguro beat Denny Sisti at ONE Friday Night Fights 115 with an unusual variation of a north/south choke.

-CJI 2's North American Misfits squad added another member with -99kg's Pat Downey. Pat is a folkstyle and freestyle wrestler who has had a successful transition to jiu-jitsu.

-We can confirm that the planned ONE Championship match between Francisco Lo and Izaak Michell has been canceled after Lo's positive USADA test.

-Brazilian jiu-jitsu coral belt Richard Bresler has passed away. Bresler was an early American adopter of jiu-jitsu and had an enormous positive impact on the sport, especially its early growth in America. We at FloGrappling extend our condolences to his friends, family, and teammates.

-Kingsway Jiu-Jitsu (fka New Wave) officially opened their new academy, moving out of the Roka PC they have trained in for two years.

-UFC BJJ has confirmed their next show will be main evented by a title match between CheckMat teammates Andrew Tackett and Renato Canuto at 170lbs. Mikey Musumeci has also stated that his next planned title defense will be against Geo Martinez, in October. 

-BJJ Clubes, a team-based gi series in Brazil, announced their second season will feature eight major teams from across the country, with $R500,000 in prize money on the line. The teams are, in alphabetical order:

  • Alliance
  • Almeida Jiu-Jitsu
  • Ataque Duplo
  • Double Five Jiu-Jitsu
  • GF Team
  • Gracie Barra
  • InFight JJ
  • Nova Uniao

-13-time IBJJF World Champion Marcus Almeida is now officially an MMA free agent and expected to garner interest from major leagues like PFL and UFC.

-ADCC announced they will hold their first Brazilian national championship in November of this year.

-Owen Jones was officially announced for WNO 29, but is without an opponent. Many have called for the match, but Gianni Grippo seems to have gotten the most traction online after repeated direct (respectful) callouts.

-2-Time IBJJF World Champion Ana Rodrigues returned at the Curitiba Pro, winning gold at lightweight. She's been out since ADCC with a torn ACL. Other winners at Curitiba include Uanderson Ferreira, Lucas Protasio, and Kamilla Souza.

What's Coming Up In BJJ

  • July 25th: WNO comes to Miami! We have already announced a bunch of major matchups, including Vagner Rocha vs Kit Dale, Adele Fornarino vs Jasmine Rocha, and more. Expect more major matches this week!
  • July 26th: BJJ Stars 16 is coming to you from Sao Paulo with. no-gi GP and several title matches. This is Brazil's biggest and best super fight show and it always delivers on action.
  • August 6th: The ADCC season begins again as the European, Middle East, & African Trials begins. Five men's trials winners will advance to the 2026 World Championships.
  • August 28-30th: The IBJJF Master Worlds & Jiu-Jitsu Con is back! This is one of the busiest tournaments in jiu-jitsu, with lots of fun stuff for fans to do.
  • August 30-31st: CJI 2, featuring 8 star-studded teams competing for a $1,000,000 prize, airs live on YouTube for grappling fans everywhere to enjoy
