Jett Thompson Wins PGF Lightweight Title | PGF Season 8 Playoffs Recap

Jett Thompson is the new PGF lightweight champion after grinding through three playoff matches in one night, ultimately defeating Dominic Mejia in the finals to capture the promotional 155-pound title. The young Thompson’s performance showcased both his submission skills and his ability to handle the razor-thin margins of PGF’s overtime format. The Team New Hope representative started the season as the most expensive draft pick in PGF history and he now makes good on that investment with this sterling result.

He opened his run with a decisive finish, submitting Matt Masch by ankle lock in regulation. The win set the tone for Thompson’s night, but the challenges only grew tougher from there. In the semifinals, he met Derek Rayfield, who had advanced with a quick ankle lock over Michael John. Their match turned into a tense battle, with neither man able to secure a submission in regulation. Thompson held strong in overtime, advancing by escape time to punch his ticket to the final.

On the opposite side of the bracket, Dominic Mejia submitted Brady Branscum by ankle lock before edging out Raphael Ferreira in overtime. That set up a showdown between the two top seeds in the bracket and two most experienced athletes of the season.

In the championship match, Thompson and Mejia went back and forth in regulation, both securing good positions with high pace. Once again, it came down to overtime, where Thompson’s sharp escapes and ability to manage the clock gave him the edge. After three rounds, he stood as the PGF lightweight champion.

The event also saw more super fight action, as Maka Vickers submitted Ally Wolski with a kimura in regulation to capture the PGF 145-pound title. Maka was pretty dominant here in what's probably her highest profile match yet, getting to several deep submissions before forcing the submission win. That's really good momentum for her heading into ADCC Trials later this year, where she can be a dark horse.
