What's Happening In Jiu-Jitsu
-The IBJJF European Championships are still going on in Lisbon, Portugal with the masters athletes continuing to deliver on action. Highlights include;
- João Miyao won masters 1 roosterweight gold
- Megaton Dias went all submissions to win his division, masters 7 lightweight
- World silver medalist Jonas Andrade won his bracket in Masters 1 black belt
- Bibiano Fernandes went all submissions to win masters 4 black belt
- Six Blades's Sarah Block won her black belt masters bracket
- Marta Giaimo of Gracie Barra won an upset at Masters 2 black belt in a gold medal performance
-The IBJJF has announced all eight men for their upcoming no-gi absolute GP, with world open class champion Pedro Marinho and brown belt open class champion Marlon Tajik joining the fray. It all goes down February 26th and streams exclusively on FloGrappling.
-With an unfortunate injury to Mateusz Szczeciński, Meyram Maquine will join Team Polaris at the Polaris Squads event later this month. This marks Maquine's debut with the UK-based promotion.
-IBJJF announced another super fight for the upcoming Grand Prix event, with rookie black belts Helena Crevar and Aghata Rabelo facing off in medium-heavy action.
-Simple Man Martial Arts coach Nicky Ryan shared on his podcast that he is still targeting a return later this year to competition. He said "We are getting there. Back to training pretty hard again so hopefully a return in 2026."
-Polaris announced that they will hold a 155lb tournament at their PSG event on February 22nd, with the winner facing off against promotional champion Ethan Crelinsten. If you want to enter, sign up here.
-The IBJJF San Jose Open went down, with some notable results;
- Francisco Papasidero took double gold for men's black belt, winning the open and super heavy.
- Pablo Lavaselli won black belt middle, beating brown belt no-gi world champion Tarcisio Santos in the finals, Mateus Moraes took bronze. Lavaselli also took silver in the open.
- Josiah Tubby of Atos won medium heavy and open class at brown belt.
- Felipe Goulart of AOJ won gold at brown belt feather and took silver in the open class.
- Karen Terra won double gold for women's black belt, beating light feather champion Melody Wong in the open class finals.
-PGF announced several more grapplers for their upcoming season at 175lbs, including Jett Thompson, Shawn Melanson, and more. Jayden Groner won the qualifier bracket in dominant fashion, going 5-0 with under 5 minutes of total mat time. Groner, 19, trains out of a 10th Planet affiliate near Chicago.
-We missed this last week but WNO veteran Tristan Sainz of AMG got his black belt at a ceremony in Miami.
