What's Happening In Jiu-Jitsu
-The IBJJF European Championship, the first gi major of the year, went down in Lisbon, Portugal with a record number of participants. GF Team took home the overall points trophy, with Alliance claiming men's adult, Atos claiming women's adult, and Melqui Galvão winning juvenile.
-Gabi Pessanha defeated Sarah Galvão by one advantage in the women's absolute finals. Soldiers BJJ closed out the men's, with Gabriel Veloso taking the nominal title. Other standout black belt runs include:
- Thaís Loureiro defeating pound-for-pound #2 Mayssa Bastos to win rooster
- Jalen Fonacier, Tainan Dalpra, Sarah Galvão, & Gabi Pessanha all winning divisional gold with every match ending by submission.
- Rookie black belts were very successful, with gold medals for William Wilson, Eduardo Alves, Ashlee Funegra, and Sarah Galvão
- Cassia Moura won the lone #1 vs #2 ranked matchup, defeating world champion Lari Campos in the finals
- Leo Ferreira won a very deep black belt bracket, defeating crowd favorite Matheus Vetoraci in the finals
-Two world champion couples both welcomed their first child; 2024 Super Grand Slam champion Mica Galvão & Olympic wrestling champion Amit Elor and black belt world champions Gustavo Batista & Luiza Monteiro. Congratulations to the happy families.
-UFC BJJ announced their fifth promotional card since their rebrand, featuring title matches with Mikey Musumeci facing Shay Montague and Ronald Junior facing Tarik Hopstock.
-Renato Canuto won his third MMA fight, extending his undefeated record with a first round armbar at Tuff-N-Uff 151.
-Helena Crevar had a successful debut at ONE Championship, submitting Teshya Alo with an Estima lock. Crevar missed weight for the match, but the bout continued as a catch weight contest.
-PGF held their final qualifying tournament. Included in the next draft will be JJ Bowers, Armin Bruni, and many others for the 4 coaching staffs to pick from.
-MMA legend & 1999 ADCC World finalist Caol Uno received his black belt at the age of 50 at a ceremony in Japan.
-ADCC & IBJJF World Champion Bia Basilio won her MMA debut at LFA Brazil by way of first round armbar
-The ADCC San Diego Open was packed with talent. Highlights include;
- Eduardo Castillo upsetting Trails finalist Sean Yadimarco at -91kg.
- Elder Cruz winning a packed -100kg division and the open class.
- Mo Black winning a tough -65kg division.
- Joslyn Molina winning double gold at -70kg and open class, beating trials champion Maria Ruffatto-Gilpin along the way.
