What's Happening In Jiu-Jitsu
-ADCC West Coast Trials is going down this week, live on FloGrappling. Action starts Saturday, with finals Sunday. Find the entrants here.
-Dante Leon beat Kenta Iwamoto at ONE Fight Night 42 in Bangkok, Thailand. Dante ensured the win with a late catch on a triangle choke.
-Kevin Beuhring beat Jett Thompson in overtime to win the PGF season 9 individual trophy. This is Beuhring's first PGF championship victory.
-Rigan Machado was promoted to red belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu by Rorion Gracie. At that same event, combat sports coach Erik Paulson received his coral belt. See footage here.
-BJJ black belt competitor Jena Bishop was in MMA action, winning in the PFL by first round rear naked choke.
-There were a record number of IBJJF open events going on over the weekend, with all brackets available here. The most notable result would likely be at lightweight where Tarcisio Santos beat fellow rookie Mateo Cardona. Santos would go on to win the open too. Despite an early loss at Pans, Santos remains a rookie that can seriously contend this season for major championships.
-Mario Lopez competed over the weekend at masters purple belt. Pretty cool!
-The Velodromo Olimpico, a venue that commonly holds jiu-jitsu events in Rio de Janeiro, was unfortunately the victim of a fire that has closed the building for the forseeable future.
-Enigma Jiu-Jitsu, an Austin-based promotion, held an invitational event in South Africa with a pair of absolute brackets for men and women each. Jason Du Randt and Hannah Griffith were the event's champions.
