Kron Gracie, son of legendary jiu-jitsu black belt and ‘no rules’ MMA fighter Rickson Gracie, won his second MMA fight by submission in Japan last night.
Gracie, now 2-0 in professional MMA, submitted Asen Yamamoto, with a triangle choke at 4.58 of the first round.
Fighting on ‘Rizin’, an event held over two days on Dec. 29 and 31, Gracie showed rudimentary striking ability but – as expected – sublime grappling skills. He came close to finishing the fight with a flying armbar and later scored a trip takedown before ending the fight with a classic triangle choke from guard.
His opponent was Asen Yamamoto, a nephew of well-known MMA fighter Norifumi ‘Kid’ Yamamoto. The Japanese fighter was a standout wrestler, placing gold at the UWW Cadet World Championships in 2013, and came from a family known for their grappling prowess. Grandfather Ikuei Yamamoto wrestled at the 1972 Olympics, his mother Miyu held several world championship titles and his aunt Seiko won four international titles.
At 27 years of age, Gracie is an ADCC world champion. His debut fight was a first-round submission win over Hyung Soo-Kim in December of 2014.
Gracie trains MMA alongside UFC fighters Nick and Nate Diaz, Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez.
“I want to be way better than my father was,” Kron has been quoted as saying. “There’s no other option for me. I will be better than him or I won’t even try.”
