In the absolute and middle-heavyweight divisions, Barral finished:
The Gracie Barra team member, a five-time IBJJF world champion, amazingly took SILVER in both his weight class and the absolute division, electing to allow his teammates Gabriel Arges and Felipe Pena to take gold instead.

Barral coaches Arges at Gracie Barra Northridge in LA and promoted Arges to black belt on the podium at IBJJF No-Gi Worlds 2016.

Felipe Pena enjoys a very close relationship with Barral, who is six years older. Barral remarked he has known Pena since the younger man was a white belt, and is close friends with his older brother Augusto ‘Tio Chico’, also a black belt in jiu-jitsu.
