At 24 years of age and almost two years into his career as a black belt, Luan Carvalho has created a reputation as one of the toughest competitors in the lightweight division. This weekend he’ll compete in the -77kg division at the Abu Dhabi World Pro, his first time at the competition as a black belt. We caught up with the Nova Uniao powerhouse as he finished his preparations and got ready to travel to the UAE.
It’s just a few days now until the World Pro, which has become one of the biggest events in jiu-jitsu. You must be excited to compete?
Very! I’ve prepared my body and soul for this competition.
World Pro matches are 6-minutes long. As you showed at the Copa Podio Lightweight Grand Prix, you have a style that works well in this format. Do you think this gives you an advantage?
I think that my experience and evolution after Copa Podio made me learn a lot, and to have a better idea of what it’s like to fight six minutes against the best in the world. Without a doubt, Ill be better prepared and well-trained to fight six minutes.
How did you get ready for this? Can you describe your training?
My training plan was done by my physical trainer Itallo Vilardo, and I follow his drilling plan and rolling program which is adapted for the time of this competition, this training makes me stronger and means I will perform better over six minutes. Also I have Victor Moitinho, who’s devising my specific training plan in the weights room. In terms of my training, I say that thanks God everything was 100%.
Many high-level Brazilians don’t have the ability to go to the IBJJF Worlds in the USA but can win a ticket to World Pro. Do you think this – where you’ve got a very different set of guys, some of them unknown, and some from different countries – changes things in Abu Dhabi?
I think without doubt this World Pro has some different, good athletes. But our focus is always to give our best there on the mat, win or lose. We have to respect all competitors, and fight the same against all of them – seriously, and with professionalism, but always in search of victory!
After the World Pro, what’s next? What’s your goal for the year?
After the World Pro I’m planning to take a few weeks off to rest and reorganize my training periodization so that I can fight in the following season. But I’m already signed up for the Brazilian Nationals and I’ll be making my middleweight debut in the gi. I fought no-gi at middleweight at the IBJJF Rio Summer Open and I felt good, I want to try out this division for future challenges down the road. But my focus will still be on the lightweight division, where I always fought.
