Gracie Barra & Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Win At Brazilian Team Nationals
The sunny tropical weather in Rio created the perfect climate for the heated dispute that was the 2016 Brazilian Team Nationals.

The tournament attracted the top teams in Brazil, with the exception of the defending champions GFTeam, who withdrew their entire team due to a disagreement with the CBJJ (national federation).

How Brazilian Team Nationals Works

The format of the Brazilian Team Nationals is very different and interesting.

Each team can put up to seven competitors forward and only two weight classes exist; lightweight and heavyweight. Brown and black belts compete in a combined division.

Five team members are chosen to fight against representatives from another team in individual matches. Points are earned for each win. The team with the most points advances in the bracket much like a standard tournament.

Team vs Team: How It Went Down

This year, Gracie Barra and Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu dominated the black belt lightweight and heavyweight divisions, respectively.

In the lightweight finals, the of AJ Agazarm, Claudio Caloquinha, Fernando Carsalade (brother of Felipe ‘Preguica’ Pena), Servio Tulio, Sergio Benini, Matheus Rocha and Phillip Diniz won the combined team of Soul Fighters / Ares BJJ by three matches to two.

In the semifinals, GB beat Ribeiro J-Jitsu and the Soulfighters / Ares BJJ team defeated Nova Uniao. A highlight was the exciting match between the brown belt Hugo Marques of Soul Fighters and dynamic black belt competitor Luan Carvalho (NU). Marques won by advantage.

At heavy, Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu (comprised of Eduardo Inojosa, Pedro Moura, Diego Santana, Tiago Pereira, and Paulo Gabriel Costa) faced off with and beat the stellar Gracie Barra team in the semifinals, which featured star athletes such as Felipe Pena, Cassius Francis, Augusto ‘Tio Chico’ and Rodrigo Fajardo, winning a count of 3-2.

In the final Ribeiro JJ returned to shine and beat Nova Uniao.

In the overall team challenge, Nova Uniao ranked first with points won across all belts and divisions, with Gracie Barra second and Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu third.
