Kennedy Maciel lost in the first round of the IBJJF 2017 European Championships today, crashing out of the first major tournament of the year.
LISBON, Portugal -- Kennedy Maciel lost in the first round of the IBJJF 2017 European Championships on Wednesday, crashing out of the first major tournament of the year.
The Alliance purple belt was the 2016 European champion, winning here last year against a slew of tough opponents.
Maciel lost to unheralded opponent Willis Nunes, an Alliance team member from Manaus, Brazil, in the opening round of the light featherweight tournament.
"I don't know, he scored early and I just couldn't get it back," Maciel said. "I thought I had him at the end there, but he was really strong. He defended well."
