One of the up-and-coming competitors from the Mendes Brothers' Art of Jiu-Jitsu academy took a hard-fought gold medal today at the IBJJF 2017 European Championships.

LISBON, Portugal -- One of the up-and-coming competitors from the Mendes Brothers' Art of Jiu-Jitsu Academy captured a hard-fought gold medal on Wednesday at the IBJJF 2017 European Championships.

Roosterweight Brad Johnston won four matches to become European purple belt champion in his first major tournament since getting promoted in late 2016.

Johnston is an assistant coach and competitor who has been training at Art of Jiu-Jitsu in Costa Mesa, California, since October 2013. He is a 2015 European and World No-Gi champion champion as a blue belt, and was promoted to purple belt on November 21.

He was coached from matside by six-time World champion Rafael Mendes.
