He's only 17 years and 9 months old, but 2016 FloGrappling Prospect of the Year Thalison Soares will compete in his first tournament as a purple belt this week at the IBJJF Pans.
Born on May 21, 1999 Soares won gold in the blue belt light featherweight division at the recent IBJJF European Championships.
The Euros were his first competition in the adult ranks, as he had competed until then as a juvenile (teen), winning the blue belt juvenile 2 light featherweight division at the IBJJF 2016 Worlds.
Following his success, Soares' head coach Cicero Costha has decided to challenge his student further by enrolling him in the purple belt roosterweight division at the IBJJF 2017 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
"There won't be a promotion ceremony, as it was at the last minute," says Soares.
