Big news from Rio de Janeiro today was that Beatriz Mesquita submitted Mackenzie Dern in the final of the women's black belt absolute division at the IBJJF Rio Fall Open.

The match lasted only 64 seconds -- Mesquita forced Dern to turtle before taking the back and locking in the match-finishing choke.

This was the first time Mesquita has submitted Dern.

Mesquita won both her division and the absolute division today. To win the middleweight division, she armbarred Joslea Silva Rodrigues in the opening round before submitting Nivia de Souza Moura in the final with an choke from mount.

Prior to beating Dern in the absolute, Mesquita submitted Andressa Lidia de Souza via cross choke from mount in the opener and defeated Talita Nogueira via points in the semi-final.

Dern skipped competing in her weight class, focusing only on the absolute. She submitted Amanda Mercini in her first match and then beat Nathiely Jesus by points in the semifinal (4-4, 1-0 adv) before facing Mesquita.
