AJ Agazarm had an "interesting" weekend in Rome, Italy. The Gracie Barra black belt displayed some some seriously bizarre behavior at the Rome International Open on Saturday April 1, and the following day got slapped in the face by one of his opponents in the European No-Gi Championships.
Fighting in the final of the gi black belt lightweight division, Agazarm faced GF Team veteran Jake Mackenzie of Canada.
The final few minutes of the match took a strange turn: From bottom half guard, Agazarm began signaling to the referee that he felt his opponent was stalling. Following a restart after they went out of bounds, Agazarm was penalized for taking too long to retie his belt.
Following the penalty Agazarm refused to engage, holding his arms out by his sides and even turning his back and bending over. At this stage, both competitors were penalized. After the second penalty and with only seconds left on the clock, Agazarm once again turned his back.

If the end to the Rome International Open lightweight black belt final was weird, what happened the next day in the absolute division of the European No-Gi Championship was shocking.
Competing against super heavyweight Muslim Patsarigov of Norway in the absolute division, Agazarm seemed to headbutt his opponent. This prompted Patsarigov to violently slap Agazarm in the face, eliciting an instant DQ.
It wasn't all bad for Agazarm -- he did win gold in the black belt lightweight division of the European No-Gi Championship.
