All Roads Lead To World Pro Part 2: Tokyo Grand Slam Retrospective
Following the opening event of the season in Los Angeles, the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Jiu-Jitsu Tour traveled to the second of five destinations: Tokyo, Japan.
Following the opening event of the season in Los Angeles, the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Jiu-Jitsu Tour traveled to the second of five destinations: Tokyo, Japan.
If the event in Los Angeles gave us an glimpse of what to expect from the rest of the seasons, the event in Tokyo helped confirm early leaders in the battle for the ranking, as well as deliver some outstanding matches!
The three athletes who would later emerge as the front runners for the ranking prize — Gabriel Arges, Xande Ribeiro and Jose Junior — were all present in Japan.
Arges took gold in the 85kg division as did Jose Junior in the 110kg category. Xande Ribeiro had to settle for silver at 94kg following a hard-fought loss to Felipe Pena. The real winners in this match were the fans though, as the two black belts put on a thrilling show in a close contest.
Notable moments from the event included:
• Brazilian-Japanese firecracker Roberto Satoshi winning 77kg gold -- watch match
• Rising talent Tomoyuki Hashimoto scored a gold medal when he was crowned champion at 62kg -- watch match
