Young gun Mauricio Oliveira continued his ascent on Friday at the IBJJF World Championships. The GF Team prodigy -- who last year won gold in the blue belt division -- came in with the hype, this year as a purple belt.

And his path got real in the quarterfinals when the 18-year-old Oliveira took out Matheus Lutes, the defending World purple belt champion. In the semi's Oliveira beat Levi Jones, this year's champion at Pan's.

For the ultimate prize, Oliveira held a precarious lead in the finals over Alex Munis of Nova Uniao. It was 0-0 with one advantage in Oliveira's favor. But inside of two minutes left, Oliveira took his back and tapped him with a choke.

Oliviera showed all the classic GF Team trademarks: relentless forward pressure and instinctive finishing ability.

Hailing from Bahia and now based in Rio de Janeiro, Oliveira also won gold at World Pro in Abu Dhabi this year.

His Worlds performance further solidified Oliveira as one of the most promising middleweight prospects in the world. Watch his run to the 2017 IBJJF Purple Belt World Title below.
