USA Claims 4 Veterans Gi Grappling Medals At UWW Grappling Worlds

The USA entered five Veterans competitors, and came home with four medals. Veterans are athletes who are 35 years old and above.

USA Claims 4 Veterans Gi Grappling Medals At UWW Grappling Worlds
BAKU, Azerbaijan – The second day of the Grappling World Championships featured competition in the youth and Veterans divisions in Gi Grappling. The USA entered five Veterans competitors, and came home with four medals. Veterans are athletes who are 35 years old and above.

Claiming bronze medals after dropping bouts in the semifinals were Dan Brecht of Sunset Beach, Calif. at 84 kg in the 35-39 years old division, and Scott Lanham of Pasadena, Texas at 92 kg in the Veterans 40-44 years old division. Athletes who lost in the semifinals were awarded bronze medals.

Brecht opened with a 4-3 win over Daniyar Tilibaev of Kyrgyzstan in the quarterfinals. He was edged in his semifinal bout by Mehman Fataliyev of Azerbaijan, 2-0. It was his second Veterans Grappling World medal for the week, after winning a bronze medal in No-Gi on Wednesday.

Lanham drew the same opponent he faced in Wednesday’s No-Gi division, when he drew Adam Mutsaiv of Russia and dropped the semifinal bout by submission.

For the second straight day, two U.S. Grapplers won gold medals without a bout, Gabe Beauperthuy of Colorado Springs, Colo at unlimited in the Veterans 40-44 year old division, as well as Jeff Anderson of Zeeland Mich. at the +100kg/Unlimited in the Veterans 50-54 year old division.

Both had finals opponents who did not appear for their bout and forfeited the medal match. Beauperthuy was scheduled to face Kuanush Murza of Kazakhstan, while Anderson was matched up with Anuar Uxumbaev of Kazakhstan.

Beauperthuy won his fourth Veterans Grappling World title, after winning both the No-Gi and Gi gold medals in last year’s Veterans Worlds in Minsk, Belarus. Beauperthuy is also on the 2017 Senior Grappling Gi team which competes on Sunday.

Anderson, now a Veterans World Grappling champion in No-Gi and Gi, also competed in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at the Veterans World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria last week.

On Friday, the Senior No-Gi competition will be held, and the USA will have nine athletes on the mat, seven men and two women. Among the Americans competing on Friday are five-time UWW World Grappling champion Lisa Ward (Olympia, Wash./United Training Center) in the women’s division, plus 2014 UWW World champion Jayson Patino (Orlando, Fla./American Top Team) and 2011 UWW World champion Brandon Ruiz (Taylorsville, Utah/Edge MMA and Fitness) in the men’s division.

The USA Grappling Team is coached by Eddy Ellis of Olympia, Wash/ Serving as referee with the U.S. delegation is Rich Tado of Lake in the Hills, Ill., who is a member of the USA Wrestling Ad-Hoc Associated Styles Committee.
