Black Belt Carnage As Favorites Fall At Rio Grand Slam

Day two of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio was one of upsets, shocks and surprises.

94kg division saw unexpected results and upsets

The 94kg division, which had 19 super tough entrants, delivered plenty of surprises.

Lucas Barbosa made a lot of noise about how he was chasing that top spot, but an injury forced him out after only his first match. Considered one of the favorites, his withdrawal meant Patrick Gaudio was unable to avenge his loss from the LA Grand Slam.

Gaudio would go on to win a questionable decision over Xande Ribeiro in the semifinal, with most observers giving the win to the veteran. Xande fought his way through the repechage into the third place match.

The other half of the 94 bracket saw Guilherme Santos beat both Adam Wardzsinki (0-0, 6-0 adv) and teammate Dimitrius Souza. Santos will face Gaudio in the final.

77kg division defies predictions

The final of the 77kg division featured two names who, even though they earned their spot, didn’t feature in many predictions. Hugo Marques of Soul Fighters will face Ricardo Lima of NS Brotherhood. What happened to the big names?

Jaime Canuto lost via decision to Hugo Marques in the semifinal, but will fight for bronze after earning the right via repechage. Veteran Celso Vinicius lost to Canuto earlier in the bracket.

Young guns to square off in 85kg

Isaque Bahiense is close to winning his second Grand Slam title of the year. After gold in Tokyo, Bahiense will meet Gustavo Batista in the final here in Rio.

Bahiense had a barn burner with Thiago Sa (watch here) in the second round and won his quarter and semifinals via submission.

This is the first major tournament for Batista, who only recently received his black belt from Leandro Lo.

Finals will go down on Sunday afternoon local time.
