Weekend Recap: Gordon Ryan Almost Gets His Arm Snapped

Gordon Ryan survives a nasty armbar for another epic win, Erberth Santos wins a motorbike, and Jake Shields aims for AJ Agazarm's head…  just another weekend in jiu-jitsu.

Gordon Ryan wins EBI 14 but not without a scare

ADCC 88kg champ Gordon Ryan was looking for his fourth EBI title on Sunday night in Austin, Texas, and his opening two matches in the most recent EBI "Absolutes" were smooth sailing as usual. A heel-hook win over Dan Borovic and an armbar over Patrick Donabedian put Ryan against Casey Hellenberg in the semifinal, which went to overtime before Ryan emerged with the victory.

It was the final which brought the most drama as Gordon squared off against Australian up-and-comer Craig Jones, who had used three inside heel hooks for a combined time of less 90 seconds of match time to earn his spot in the final.

Ryan beat Jones in September at ADCC via submission, but the Aussie is improving leaps and bounds and managed to take Ryan into OT. Choosing to attack for an armbar, Jones managed to lock out Ryan’s limb in a wince-inducing attack.

Somehow, Ryan managed to escape from the perilous position and would go on to tap Jones out via RNC in the following round of OT.

If there was any injury to his arm, Ryan won’t have long to heal it, as he will compete against ADCC 99kg champ Yuri Simoes in the main event of KASAI Pro on Dec. 9 in New York.

Jake Shields swings for AJ’s head following SUG main event

There’s no love lost between AJ Agazarm and Jake Shields, who have come to blows more than once at various grappling events. First, Shields slapped Agazarm around during their Polaris superfight in April 2016 and later launched a kick at Agazarm following the Gracie Barra black belt’s loss to Garry Tonon at Fight To Win this February.

Shortly after the main event at Submission Underground 6 in Portland, OR, on Sunday, Shields used his post-fight interview with promoter Chael Sonnen to call out "The Florida Boy" for a match, saying he’d welcome the chance to slap Agazarm once again.

Agazarm entered the cage and made a beeline for Shields, who squared up and started swinging while Sonnen tried his best to get between them. It looked as if one of Shields’ slaps may have caught Agazarm (or possibly Sonnen) upside the head.

Erberth Santos wins a motorbike

Competing in a tournament in Maceio in the state of Alagoas called the "Copa dos Campeos" (Champion’s Cup), Erberth Santos unsurprisingly won the top prize, although it wasn’t just a shiny medal.

Santos’ prize was a Honda Cg Fan 160 motorcycle, which retails for around $2,800. Not bad.
