New Generation Cicero Costha Athletes Shine At No-Gi Worlds

By Michael Sears | Athletes from the Sao Paulo-based PSPLB Cicero Costha team closed out three different weight classes on Sunday in the adult purple belt divisions at No-Gi Worlds in Anaheim, CA.

This astonishing display of firepower at the lower ranks highlights the effectiveness of Cicero’s system, which has produced black belt champions such as Leandro Lo and the Miyao brothers.

Johnif Oliveira and Thalison “Little Miyao” Soares first closed out the roosterweight division. The reigning gi world champ Soares bowed out to his teammate. Both athletes won three matches to reach the finals.

The light-featherweight bracket was conquered by the combined force of Diego Batista and Jonas Andrade. Batista was also a 2017 world champion in the gi, and the incredibly active Andrade is the top-ranked purple belt in the IBJJF rankings.

In the lightweight division, Italo Moura and Jeferson Guaresi closed out yet another bracket. Moura and Guaresi are actually only two-thirds of Cicero’s lightweight arsenal, as 2017 gi world champion Wilson Moreira also regularly competes at light.

The next generation of Cicero Costa athletes looks destined to rule the lower weights and follow in the footsteps of predecessors Paulo Miyao, Joao Miyao, Jose Thiago, and Hiago George.
