Blue Belts Challenge Brazilian Dominance At IBJJF 2018 Euros
The results were heavily influenced by the presence of the international competitors.
The second day of the IBJJF European Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, opened Wednesday with the male blue belt divisions, and the results were heavily influenced by the presence of the international competitors.
Of the male blue belts crowned champion, five were Brazilian, while the remaining four hailed from countries including:
- Ukraine (Roman Nepota, middleweight)
- France (Ferrah Loutfi, medium heavyweight)
- Austria (Bryan Thompson, super heavyweight)
- Belgium (Ilias Hadi, ultra-heavyweight)
Brazilian Vinicius Liberati of Cicero Costha took double gold, winning both the heavyweight and absolute divisions. Liberati beat absolute finalist Gerald Pietrosemoli by walkover. The Frenchman Pietrosemoli injured his arm in a semifinal match versus Roman Nepota, which saw the Ukrainian get DQ'd for holding onto a submission after the referee called for a stop to the action as they rolled out of bounds. Liberati's semifinal match with Lucas Protasio of ZR Team was a fitting substitute with plenty of action.
The only team to win more than one gold medal at blue belt was ZR Team Association, with lightweight champ Lucas Protasio (main image above), middleweight division winner Roman Nepota, and super-heavyweight champion Bryan Thompson.
